Researchers have found new evidence of modern culture's beginnings in a cave in South Africa. These findings may indicate that 'modern behavior as we know it' has existed for longer than previously thought.?

The findings published in the journal "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" show that the 44,000-year-old artifacts are characteristic of the San hunter-gatherers. The descendants of San people live today in southern Africa, so the items can clearly be traced forward to modern culture, unlike other archaeological finds, researchers said.

South?African?researcher Lucinda Backwell said the findings are the earliest known instances of "modern behavior as we know it." Backwell said the discovery reinforces the theory that modern man came from southern Africa.

The carbon dating on the items shows that traces of the San culture may have existed earlier than the previous estimate of somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago, the journal said.

The find, discovered at Border Cave close to?South?Africa's northeastern border with Swaziland, is a comprehensive package of hunting kits and jewelry made of ostrich egg and marine shell beads.

Backwell, who was part of the team of international researchers that made the find, said the artifacts created as many as 44,000 years ago served the same purposes as they would today.

"They all have a specific reason we understand, that's why we can name them," Backwell said.

The researchers' articles said the Border Cave people used poisoned arrows to hunt and put spiral engraving on arrowheads to indicate ownership. The latter practice has been preserved in the San culture, they said.

Professor Francesco d'Errico of the French National Research Centre, who led the research team, said that the findings tell of a people who were highly evolved.

"They were fully modern genetically and cognitively," d'Errico said.

Their cognitive development is evident in their symbolic behavior, the professor said. The ostrich egg beads were not only ornaments, but played a major role in bartering with neighboring groups, he said. That practice continues today.

The paper claimed that the?fossils?show that all modern culture came from southern Africa, though the researchers acknowledged it remains difficult to pinpoint where in history that modernity began.

Eric Delson, a paleoanthropologist at Lehman College of the City University of New York, said that while the testing used by the researchers to determine the age of the?fossils?was very clear and reliable, the findings didn't support the idea that all modern human cultures are connected to this find.

He said there is evidence that a modern culture already existed in Europe around the time the new find is dated.

"They say, 'Modern human behavior first found!'" Delson said. "Well, not exactly."

He did, however, applaud the research for finding the origins of one specific group of modern people.

Scientists from Britain, France, Italy, Norway,?South?Africa and the U.S. all took part in the research, helmed out of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

Fabian Cancellara is planning to defend his time-trial gold medal.

The man known as "Spartacus" had his Olympic future thrown into doubt when he crashed while trying to navigate a right turn late in Saturday's road race. Cancellara had broken his collarbone earlier this year at the Tour of Flanders, and was worried that he'd done it again.

He was taken for X-rays that turned out negative, and the four-time world champion said Monday that he's planning to race through the pain Wednesday at Hampton Court Palace.

Swiss team doctor Andreas Goesele likened the spill to being in a "car crash, with a whiplash injury." He also said that Cancellara would have to ride through pain because the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of prohibited substances limits what he can prescribe.

Cancellara remains one of the favorites for the race, along with reigning world champion Tony Martin of Germany and Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins of Britain.

Russia court orders BP to pay $3.1 bn for failed deal

A Siberian court on Friday piled more legal pressure on BP by ordering the British group to pay $3.1 billion in damages for its attempted Arctic oil exploration tie-up with the state giant Rosneft.

The ruling comes as BP holds direct negotiations with Rosneft, Russia's largest oil firm, to buy out the British firm's stake in the troubled TNK-BP joint venture it co-owns with four local tycoons.

A lawyer for plaintiff Andrei Prokhorov said the court's 100-billion-ruble ($3.1-billion) ruling came against London-based BP plc and the group's BP Russia Investment Limited venture.

"We are fully satisfied," attorney Dmitry Chepurenko said by telephone from the oil-producing region of Tyumen.

"For us, this decision was not a surprise."

Prokhorov, a minority shareholder, had reduced demands in his suit to $8.9 billion from the original sum of $12.5 billion on account of a drop in the price of oil since the day the initial agreement was first signed in January 2011.

Prokhorov has always denied he was acting in the interests of the four powerful Soviet-era billionaires who operate their half of the company through the Alfa Access Renova (AAR) consortium.

AAR successfully blocked the deal in a European court of arbitration by arguing that BP had an obligations to offer TNK-BP priority rights to any operations it would like to conduct across the country.

Prokhorov said TNK-BP Holding lost potential profits by being shut out of the $16 billion share-swap and joint exploration venture.

The Arctic deal eventually went to the US super-major ExxonMobil.

The ruling will make no immediate financial impact on BP because it can still fight the ruling in higher courts -- a process that Prokhorov's attorney said could take "at least" six months.

But it will also remind BP of the other court battles it has waged -- and often lost -- in Russia when facing complications with either its tycoon partners or the state.

A BP attorney immediately denounced the ruling as a "corporate attack" that demonstrated the court's subservience to the government's wishes.

"This court ruling seriously damages the Russian court system's reputation and proves its inability to defend honest investors against illegal corporate attacks," BP lawyer Konstantin Lukoyanov told the RIA Novosti news agency in Tyumen.

"All of the plaintiff's claim are based on absurd assumptions that have nothing in common with the interests of TNK-BP or its shareholders," the BP lawyer said.

Prokhorov owns just a small handful of shares in the venture's holding company and most economists agree that his case would have never survived either the European or US court systems.

The controversial claim had already been rejected once in November -- a move that came just two months after British Prime Minister David Cameron addressed the issue with Russia's ruling tandem of Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev.

But the case was picked up again this year just as BP was entering another war of words with the AAR billionaires over future TNK-BP strategy and dividend payments.

BP eventually put up its half of Russia's third-largest oil company for sale in July 1 and received a quick bid from the tycoon's themselves.

Rosneft entered the fray as expected this week and has three months to negotiate an agreement that could see BP lose an instant cash source that has provided $19 billion in dividend payment's since TNK-BP's creation in 2003.

Analysts believe BP views a deal with Rosneft as a way of improving its relations with the Russian state and potentially regaining access to lucrative unexplored reserves.

Buying a first home comes with a lot of surprises, especially for those buying into a New York City co-op or condo. The process is like no place else and Karen Sonn, real estate attorney at Sonn & Associates, says no matter how much she prepares her clients, she finds the same things always leave buyers speechless.

For example, most have no idea just how invasive the process is.

?People are completely taken aback that they are going to give all their private information, all their accounts, what they earn, their social securities, references and everything about themselves, in order to get into a building in New York City,? Sonn says.

With an application comes a lot of processing fees and that too has sticker shock.

?You have to pay all these fees just for the application. And if you get rejected by the board, those fees don?t come back to you. And they can be the credit fees, the board application fee and a background check,? Sonn says.

Also, when it comes to the loan, many buyers think they are in the clear when the bank issues a commitment letter. Not true. A commitment letter usually comes with conditions and the bank won?t actually give the money until the buyer gives the bank whatever it needs to meet all the conditions.

And perhaps the biggest surprise comes at the closing table.

?People assume that you can come to a closing with a regular check. That?s not the case. The only, only type of check that you can come with is an official bank check. And you can?t just go to the bank and get one easily. You have to have all your money liquid in the accounts. People make the mistake of transferring last minute and the bank will take 10 days to clear,? Sonn says.

And once the deal closes many are under the false assumption that they can start renovations right away. Think again. The new owner needs to first file alteration agreements with the building and that usually can?t be done until closing. Then approval is needed, which could take a few days to a week on a small job or months to years on big jobs that involve permits.

So just because the home is under a person?s name doesn?t mean it can be made to feel like home until the process is fully complete.

Their approach to men is fundamentally dishonest and manipulative, and they draw in predatory men who are equally dishonest and manipulative, then turn around and blast ALL men for their poor choices.

As the years go by, the cumulative failures of their dishonest strategies lead them to become bitter and hate-filled toward the entire male sex. No self-respecting man would put up with their gauntlets of emotional barbed-wire in order to get close to them, so they end up locking themselves into prisons of their own creation.

Then, they get jobs as "wimmins's studdees" professors.

The problem I see is that thousands of years of oral tradition of teaching kids how to live within a family and get along, have been virtually completely destroyed in a couple of generations. As we all well know, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than to get a woman to acknowledge the responsibility of her own actions and choices in the results she gets - so most of these women are going to go to their graves without ever wising up.

Divorce seems to function like an infectious disease - once the parents get it, they pass it along to generation after generation of children. The divorce rate among children of divorce is much higher than the average for the population, which points to the obvious fact that for children of intact families it is much lower.

Here are some of the observed effects of removing a father to the position of a visitor in a child`s life.
"Based on our clinical experience with a number of latency aged and adolescent girls whose parents divorced during their oedipal years, we postulate that particular coping patterns emerge in response to the absence of the father, which may complicate the consolidation of positive feminine identification in many female children, and is observable during the latency years. We illustrate both the existence of these phenomena and implications for treatment:
1. intensified separation anxiety
2. denial and avoidance of feelings associated with loss of father
3. identification with the lost object
4. object hunger for males."

The history of surfing

Did you know that surfing did not start on the California beaches in the 1960's?

Surfing is one of the oldest practiced sports in the world, and is a beautiful blend of athleticism as well as the recognition, and appreciation of the power of nature.The board was used by fishermen.

It all started about 4000 years ago on the Polynesian coastline. The sport stared out as what we would now call body surfing and evolved from that into what we recognise today as surfing - board and all. As far as we know, the board was introduced into Western Polynesia around 3000 years ago.

Fishermen found that it was an easy way of bringing their catch back to shore - surf wax only came along a lot later.

Kings and queens in the waves

No-one is sure when surfing was classified as a sport. We do know that 15th century kings and queens of the Sandwich Isles loved to surf, as did their people. Surfing appears in historical records in the late 1700s, this is when the English first came into contact with the Polynesians.

Captain Cook wrote "I saw a man paddling in a small canoe so quickly and looking about him with such eagerness of each side. He then sat motionless and was carried along at the same swift rate as the wave, till it landed him upon the beach. Then he started out, emptied his canoe, and went in search of another swell. I could not help concluding that this man felt the most supreme pleasure while he was driven on so fast and so smoothly by the sea."

They said surfing was indecent

Surfing was forbidden by Christian Missionaries in the early 1820s. It was seen as indecent and a waste of time. Luckily for surfers everywhere this opinion changed in the early 20th century when the Hawaiian Duke Kanahamoku,-swimming gold medallist- spread the sport throughout the world.

How surfing came to Hawaii

Surfing was brought to Hawaii by the Polynesians who settled there in the fourth century and was known as "he'enalu" or wave-sliding. In ancient Hawaiian, "he'e" means to change from solid to liquid form, and "nalu" is the motion of the wave. The Polynesian men and women have great knowledge and a great love for the ocean and brought many customs with them to their new home, including spending time in the waves with their "paipo" (belly boards).

Although they stood on their "paipo" from time to time, the Hawaiian people are responsible for perfecting the art of surfing upright.

The 1907 revival

By the turn of the 20th Century surfing had all but disappeared in the Hawaiian Islands until in 1907 Jack London spent a holiday in Waikiki, Hawaii. There were a few surfers on the beach including, the most famous Waikiki beach boy at that time, George Greeth and Alexander Hume Ford, an eccentric journalist and wanderer. They introduced London to the joys of surfing.

Although the three men had very different backgrounds and careers, by the end of London's time on the island they had one thing in common - surfing. It was these three men who, through their combined talents, breathed new life into the sport.Surfin' USA

The growth of the sport was relatively slow from 1779 through to 1960. That's when the surfing boom exploded big time. With this renaissance surfing music was born. Bands like the Beach Boys rocketed to the number one spot. Surfing was cool, surf magazines filled the shelves, the music was popular and the beaches were crowded.

The days when kings and their subjects rode the waves together are long gone. Today the international surfing circuit is a multi-million dollar industry. The tour runs from Hawaii to South Africa to Tahiti.Whether you're a boogie boarder, a body surfer or a seasoned professional, you'll have a favourite beach?
