SAN FRANCISCO ? The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for the early release of nearly 10,000 California inmates by year's end.
A lower court had previously ordered the state to cut its prison population by nearly 8 percent to ease overcrowding it said amounted to to cruel and unusual punishment. The panel found inmates were needlessly dying and suffering because of inadequate medical and mental health care caused by overcrowding.
But Gov. Jerry Brown and other state officials warn the releases could cause a public safety crisis.
The president of the California Police Chiefs Association says the justices ignored efforts already underway to reduce prison populations and "chose instead to allow for the release of more felons into already overburdened communities."

As earnings season continues, some companies have highlighted the impact of "unusual weather patterns" on their second quarter results.According to Goldman Sachs economist David Kostin, "A cool, wet season in parts of the US and Europe dampened some consumer activity, while business in other regions benefitted from an exceptionally hot summer."
In a new report for clients, Kostin pulled statements from various weather-dependent companies to show how climate was a theme of this earnings season.
Coca-Cola Co.
On top of this, we were faced with unusually widespread wet and cold weather conditions across multiple regions, including North America, across Northern Europe and India, all of which impacted the entire industry.
Unfortunately, we experienced an extremely wet and cold second quarter, with more rain in the U.S. in June than we've seen in 50 years; and 44% more precipitation than in June of last year.
Additionally, historically wet and cold conditions across Europe, including the coldest spring for Germany in 40 years, further dampened already weak consumer sentiment and industry trends, and contributed to volume declining 3% in Germany in the quarter.
Walgreens
As with other retailers, the weather had a negative impact on seasonal sales in the third quarter.
CMS Energy Corp
Later in the year, we benefited from a hotter than normal summer and put this upside to use by investing substantially more in tree trimming, generating plant maintenance and system hardening. The benefits are showing up in our present reliability performance during prolonged hot and humid weather.
Costco
Fortunately, we are in, I think, 41 or 42 states in Puerto Rico in the U.S. if you will. And so when the weather was bad in one part of the country it wasn?t bad in the other part of the country.?
For companies like United Technologies Corp., which deals in air conditioning, a hot summer is a great thing. Their orders were up nearly 20% this quarter.

HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe's Movement for Democratic Change said on Friday it could take to the streets to challenge President Robert Mugabe's victory in elections it rejects as a farce and which face skepticism from the West.
No results of the presidential vote on July 31 have been announced. But Mugabe's ZANU-PF has already claimed a resounding win and interim tallies of the parliamentary count suggest a massive victory for the 89-year-old, Africa's oldest president, who has ruled since independence from Britain in 1980.
While the African Union's monitoring mission chief called Wednesday's peaceful polls generally "free and fair", domestic monitors have described them as "seriously compromised" by registration flaws that may have disenfranchised up to a million people.
Western observers were kept out by Harare. However, those from the Southern African Development Community, a regional group, described the elections as "free and peaceful" and urged Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai to accept the result.
Tsvangirai, who faces political annihilation in his third attempt to oust Mugabe at the ballot box, has already denounced the vote as a "huge farce" marred by polling day irregularities and intimidation by ZANU-PF.
Western rejection of the regional African verdict on the election could stir tensions with the continent. Acceptance of Mugabe's victory will be criticized in countries that say he is a despot guilty of rights abuses and ruining the economy.
The mood on the streets of the capital Harare was subdued on Friday as the MDC leadership met to chart the next move, with everything from a legal challenge to street protests on the table. "Demonstrations and mass action are options," party spokesman Douglas Mwonzora said.
"DAYLIGHT ROBBERY"
Some disappointed voters expressed disbelief at the election outcome. "This is daylight robbery, but I think the MDC should have realized that, without violence, ZANU-PF would still do something to cheat," said McDonald Sibanda, a 34-year-old insurance salesman. "I'm disgusted by all this."
An MDC protest campaign against the election results could elicit a fierce response from security forces and pro-Mugabe militias, who were accused of killing 200 MDC supporters after Mugabe lost the first round of the last election in 2008.
Justice minister and ZANU-PF deputy legal affairs secretary Patrick Chinamasa scoffed at the MDC criticism of the vote.
"Really? When 3.95 million people go to vote in cold weather you call it a farce?" he told a news conference. Chinamasa said defeated candidates could take their complaints to the courts.
The latest tally put ZANU-PF on course for a two-thirds majority in parliament, a number that would allow it to amend a constitution adopted earlier this year that limits presidential terms to two five-year stints.
"The constitution may need cleaning up," he said, although the essence of the charter would not be changed.
Britain, a sharp critic of Mugabe in the past, said it was concerned that Zimbabwe had not enacted important electoral reforms before the vote.
The U.S. government, which maintains sanctions against Mugabe, said "a peaceful and orderly election day does not by itself guarantee a free and fair outcome".
"Now the critical test is whether voting tabulation is conducted in a credible and transparent manner, and whether the outcome truly reflects the will of the people of Zimbabwe," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said in Washington.
Europe and the United States now face the awkward decision of what to do with the sanctions they have in place against Mugabe and his inner circle.
WHAT WILL WEST DO?
The Western skepticism contrasted with the assessment made by the AU election observer team leader, former Nigerian military leader and civilian president Olusegun Obasanjo. He acknowledged "minor incidents" surrounding the July 31 poll but said they were not enough to affect the overall result.
Tsvangirai, who is prime minister in Zimbabwe's unity government, has called the election "not credible" and appealed to the AU to investigate. But Obasanjo, whose own re-election in Nigeria in 2003 was marked by violence and widespread fraud allegations, declined to comment on the MDC leader's assertion, calling him "an interested party".
The AU verdict, echoed by President Jacob Zuma of Zimbabwe's powerful neighbor South Africa, suggests the MDC's appeals for external pressure on Mugabe may be falling on deaf ears
Zuma, the main guarantor of the unity government brokered after the 2008 unrest, chose to focus on the orderly conduct of the poll. "Something good has happened in Zimbabwe. The elections were so peaceful," he told broadcaster SABC.
But a Mugabe victory would pose problems for the United States and European Union. "This leaves the EU and U.S. in an extremely difficult situation," said Piers Pigou, director of the southern Africa project of International Crisis Group in Johannesburg.
The EU, which relaxed some sanctions early this year after a new constitution was approved in a referendum, said it was too early to assess the election's fairness.
Given the sanctions, the view from the West is crucial to the future of Zimbabwe's economy, which is still struggling with the aftermath of a decade-long slump and hyperinflation that ended in 2009 when the worthless Zimbabwe dollar was scrapped.

Snippets of the Church of Ireland Gazette from 1913
Modern readers of the Church of Ireland Gazette are well aware of its availability in electronic format (as well as hardcopy) since 2005 here
Written and read by lay and clerical members of the Church of Ireland, the Gazette which has always been editorially independent, provides the longest-running public commentary on its affairs, and as such is a recognised resource for understanding the complexities and nuances of Church of Ireland identity, both north and south, as well as the Church's contribution to political and cultural life throughout the island.
Less well know may be that the RCB Library in Dublin holds the only complete run of 'Gazettes' - from the first issue in March 1856 and up to the present date which are bound up in hard copy volumes for each year where they remain an invaluable resource. Long considered to be the Church of Ireland's weekly newspaper and the first port of call for researchers wishing to obtain an insight into the opinions and attitudes of members of the Church of Ireland through changing times, the Gazette is consulted on a daily basis by a wide range of people and for many diverse research interests.
To date, as far as the older volumes are concerned, this research has had to be done using the cumbersome hardcopies available in the RCB Library. An extensive run is also available at Armagh Public Library, which may be useful for readers in Northern Ireland, but this is not complete.
To demonstrate the potential of the Gazette as a research resource, and continuing its commitment to mark the Decade of Commemorations, the RCB Library is pleased to present all 52 editions of The Church of Ireland Gazette for the year 1913, in a fully searchable format online as the Archive of the Month for August, in collaboration with the Editor and Board of the Gazette.
All 52 issues of the Gazette for 1913 have been professionally scanned using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) by the service provider Informa, and via a sophisticated information platform are fully searchable online. Browsers may simply enter any key word or phrase of interest in the search box on the platform, and then view the list of relevant entries as they appear in chronological order, viewing each either as a single page, or in the wider context of the particular issue of the newspaper in which it appears.
Burning issues of the day such as Home Rule, the rise of the trade union movement and efforts to control it, women's suffrage, educational change, children, the impact of the Ulster Covenant and formation of the Ulster Volunteer Force, as well as the darkening political situation on mainland Europe on the eve of the First World War and events further away, are all well covered and commented upon in 1913.
The '1913 pilot' provides a valuable snapshot view of the Church of Ireland community 100 years ago. It is intended to demonstrate how technological advances offer radical alternatives to unlock hidden knowledge from all the other years in the 149-year run of weekly Gazettes from 1856 to 2005 (when it became available electronically). To complete the project, and cover all the years of publication, the RCB Library, in conjunction with the Gazette Board, is now investigating appropriate sources to digitise the entire collection, making an invaluable contribution to historical knowledge and enabling multiple readers to engage on-screen.

is the so-called 'inadmissibility of acquiring territory by force' referenced in many UN resolutions on Israel. The only problem is that for something to become a generally accepted principle of law, it has to be shown to have been enforced in the majority of cases, not just where Israel (or oil) is concerned. As this article clearly points out, this principle is NOT and has not been enforced in the majority of cases (including many which have occurred AFTER the founding of the UN in 1945 and the founding of Israel in 1948). That is a fact and I challenge anyone to come up with examples showing that this so-called 'principle of international law' has been enforced in the majority of cases.

NEW YORK ??The science fiction film "Europa Report" is set to hit movie theaters Friday (Aug. 2), but tonight, the film will launch at one of the major science centers in the Big Apple: the American Museum of Natural History.
"Europa Report" documents the fictional tale of the first manned mission to Jupiter's icy moon Europa on a hunt for life. The film features mock interviews with people involved in the mission as the truth about the harrowing trip to the moon is revealed. [See photos from the film "Europa Report"]
"The American Museum of Natural History is the perfect venue to premiere 'Europa Report,'" associate producer Matt Levin said in an email. "There's no better place than the Hayden Planetarium to showcase a film about the spirit of human exploration and our search for extraterrestrial life."
"Europa Report" director Sebasti?n Cordero will be in attendance during tonight's premiere and Bear McCreary, the composer of the movie's music, will perform the score from the film. Actors Christian Camargo, who portrays scientist Daniel Luxembourg, and Karolina Wydra, who plays marine scientist Katya Petrovna in the movie, will also be in attendance.
Cordero, Camargo, Wydra, McCreary and producer Ben Browning will take part in a question and answer session with a sold-out crowd moderated by Popular Science's Dave Mosher after the screening.
Some fans of the film are billing it as one of the most scientifically accurate movies about human spaceflight in recent memory. The realism of "Europa Report" was part of the reason Cordero was interested in the script ? written by Philip Gelatt ? in the first place.
"One of the first things that drew me to the script was the fact that, as I was reading it, everything in there seemed to be at least inspired by what we know both about space travel and the possibility of what could be found on Europa while at the same time keeping a great equilibrium with making a movie that was also thrilling and interesting that kept me gripped until I finished the last page of the script," Cordero told SPACE.com.
Two NASA scientists ? Kevin Hand and Steven Vance ? acted as science advisors for the film. They were involved throughout production and post-production, helping the cast and crew understand the science of Europa.
"Europa is what I study, and of course, I was a little bit nervous because it's a subject matter that's near and dear to might heart," Hand told SPACE.com. "If they were going to tackle that subject matter I wanted to make sure that they were committed to getting the science correct. Thankfully that team, the writer, the director, the producers, the actors were very dedicated to telling the compelling story and getting the science right."
In addition to launching in theaters nationwide on Friday, "Europa Report" has also been available via video on demand services since late June.

HOUSE GOP: In this week's address, Majority Leader Eric Cantor unveils a plan to stop to government abuse among federal agencies. From the IRS targeting political and religious groups to wasting millions of taxpayer dollars on extravagant conferences, the waste and abuse of power must stop.
ERIC CANTRO: "All the while, an out-of-touch government in Washington continues to abuse its power and put special interests first while hard working Americans are left to pay the bill."Many in Washington have forgotten the most important principle ? that the federal government works for you ? and not the other way around.
"Each week, House Republicans are working to fix this problem. This week, we will address government abuse that is threatening your hard-earned paycheck, as well as your sacred liberties.
"We will cut government waste by passing legislation that prevents Washington bureaucrats from recklessly spending your tax dollars. We will ensure senior government officials accused of serious offenses and unethical conduct won?t be paid while under investigation; we will put an end to lavish conferences and employee retreats by requiring online disclosures and prior approval by senior officials; and we will stop the excessive granting of hefty bonuses to government employees.
"Squandering other people?s money is one of the easiest ways to lose their trust.
"These measures are a step in the right direction toward restoring trust with you, the taxpayers.
"We also will focus on restoring faith in our economy. Intrusive government regulations continue to hurt job growth and make your paycheck smaller. The REINS Act requires Congress to approve any new regulation proposed by bureaucrats that threatens to impact and add costs to our businesses and working families. Cutting red tape makes sense ? it creates jobs and puts more money in your wallet.
"We will also remove the IRS from having anything to do with your health care. A few weeks ago, the White House announced it would delay the employer mandate under Obamacare. The evidence is clear, this law is threatening job growth and turning full-time jobs into part-time jobs. On top of the negative economic and health consequences of Obamacare, the law requires an unholy union between the IRS and your protected health information.
"Recently all of us have been finding out more about the IRS, its activities, and its databases. The doctor?s office is the last place anyone would want to find the IRS. Your health care information is private and should remain so.
"And finally, House Republicans will give you more power to hold Washington accountable. We will move legislation guaranteeing a citizen?s right to record conversations with federal regulators. We will also act to require government agencies to adopt customer service standards. How a government employee interacts with you the taxpayer must be considered when it comes time to evaluate how well they do their job.
"We look forward to passing this agenda, but we need your help.
"Please visit CoSponsor.gov to learn more about these reforms and voice your opinion by becoming a citizen co-sponsor of any or all of these bills.
"You can also go to Twitter and support these measures by tweeting #StopGovtAbuse. This legislation should receive bipartisan support because these are not just reforms we want, these are reforms our nation needs.
"You deserve a government that works for you, not against you. Enacting these reforms is one step towards rebuilding the trust in our government and faith in our economy. Thank you and have a great weekend."

This courtroom sketch depicts James "Whitey" Bulger at the beginning of jury selection for his trial in U.S. District Court in Boston, on June 4. Bulger faces a long list of crimes, including playing a role in 19 killings.
By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News
The prosecution rested in the trial of James ?Whitey? Bulger on Friday after seven weeks of testimony from the former head of the Winter Hill Gang?s ex-compatriots and alleged victims.
The defense for Bulger, 83, could begin to present its case as early as Monday at a federal courthouse in Boston, and is set to call up to 16 witnesses.
Bulger is accused of terrorizing South Boston for decades before spending 16 years on the run, evading FBI agents until he was arrested in Santa Monica, Calif., in 2011. He is on trial on federal charges of racketeering and the murder of 19 people.
The prosecution's witness list was peppered with alleged victims of Bulger's extortion and strong-arming and a host of confederates with gangland nicknames such as "The Rifleman" and "The Executioner." The trial so far has been full of witness-stand revelations and sometimes inconsistent testimony, said Chris Dearborn, a professor at Suffolk University, all of which the defense will likely try to pick apart in the coming week.
?This has been quite a cast of characters,? Dearborn said.
The defense is expected to take far less time than the prosecution in presenting their case, said Gerard T. Leone, a former prosecutor and partner at Nixon Peabody.
?I think they?re going to continue to try to develop their three themes that they opened with, which is Number One, that Whitey Bulger is not an informant; Number Two, that he was provided with some type of immunity; and Three, that he did not kill the females,? Leone said.
That will include attempting to chip away at the credibility of three former Bulger associates and star government witnesses: Stephen ?The Rifleman? Flemmi, John ?The Executioner? Martorano and Kevin Weeks.
?You?ve got to hammer the big three witnesses. You have to hammer those because they?re the most damaging in some respects,? Leone said.
On Thursday, Flemmi wound up nearly a week of testimony. Flemmi, who is serving a life sentence for 10 murders, recounted details of several killings that Bulger was allegedly involved in, and on Tuesday accused his former boss of having a relationship with a 16-year-old girl who he took to Mexico.
"You want to talk about pedophilia, right over there at that table," Flemmi said while pointing at Bulger, according to Reuters.
Another witness, Richard Buccheri, told the court on Thursday that Bulger threatened him with a shotgun in the 1980s, one of several tales of alleged extortion in the course of the trial.
?He slammed the table. Then he takes a shotgun that was on the table and sticks it in my mouth,? Buccheri said, according to Reuters. ?He said he wanted 200 ? he meant $200 thousand.?
Buccheri, a real estate developer, testified that Bulger then pulled the shotgun from his mouth and pressed a handgun against his head.
?He said, ?If you don?t pay me in 30 days I?m going to kill you and your family,?? Buccheri testified. ?I agreed to pay.?
Bulger has pleaded not guilty to a federal indictment that includes 19 murders, among other crimes. Prosecutors have said that Bulger was an FBI informant, an accusation that the aging gangster has vehemently denied.
His defense team did its best to attack Flemmi?s credibility on cross examination. Attorney Henry Brennan asked Flemmi whether he expected a reduced sentence for his sometimes gory testimony, which included an account of the strangling death of Deborah Hussey.
?I don?t know what the future holds,? Flemmi responded, according to Reuters. ?Everybody hopes that at some point in the future something beneficial will happen to him. I?m still alive and that?s the hope.?
The big remaining question, Leone said, is whether Bulger himself will take the stand ? something he might be tempted to do to salvage whatever might remain of his tough-guy legacy in the neighborhood he once ruled.
?Martorano, Weeks, and especially Flemmi, they really in some ways, it?s not a legal onus, but they?ve put the messaging onus back on Bulger,? Leone said.

The UFC returns to network television with Saturday's UFC on Fox 8 bouts. What will we learn from these fights? Check it out.
Can flyweights put on a bout people will want to watch? Small fighters usually have more energy in the cage. Their technique is usually better because they can't rely on muscling their opponents. They fly around the octagon with speed heavyweights and light heavyweights can only dream of. But is that enough to get people to tune in? Saturday's card is headlined by a flyweight title bout between Demetrious Johnson and John Moraga. Will you tune in?
Is Jake Ellenberger deserving of a welterweight title shot? He has just one loss in his last eight fights. His last win was a memorable knockout of Nate Marquardt, but it wasn't enough to earn a title shot. On Saturday, he's facing off with Rory MacDonald. With an impressive win, Ellenberger can get closer to the UFC belt. Will he get it?
Can Liz Carmouche rebound from her loss to Ronda Rousey? For her first UFC fight, Liz Carmouche was under an intense spotlight. As one of the first two women to fight in the UFC, she was expected to put on a thrilling fight. She delivered, but lost to current bantamweight champ Rousey. Now she will fight Jessica Andrade in a slightly lower-profile fight. Will Carmouche get her first UFC win?
Was Robbie Lawler's win over Josh Koscheck a fluke? At UFC 157, Lawler earned a Knockout of the Night bonus for his first-round KO of Koscheck. But after years of inconsistent fighting in Strikeforce, did the knockout win mean Lawler is a true contender? We will find out as he takes on Bobby Voelker on Saturday.
Is this Melvin Guillard's last fight in the UFC? Guillard is 1-4 in his last five fights. He admits not only is he lucky to still have a place in the UFC, but only has it because he took the fight with Donald Cerrone. If he doesn't beat Danzig, he doesn't expect to have a job.
"I've got one foot in [the UFC] and one foot out, but I'll be damned if I let both feet get kicked out. Right now, I'm fighting for my job. I'm not going to get cut from the UFC. I'll die in that ring on July 27th before I let Danzig take my job from me," Guillard told ESPN.
Will that determination be enough for a win, or is this the last fight in the UFC for Guillard, who debuted with the promotion in 2008?

LONDON (Reuters) - Mervyn King, the former head of the Bank of England, will give lectures at New York University's Stern School of Business and School of Law as a visiting professor later this year, the NYU said on Monday.
Cambridge- and Harvard-educated King stepped down at the end of June after 10 years as Bank governor.
An academic before he joined the central bank in 1990, King played a role in coordinating the global response to the financial crisis.
"His more than two decades of experience at the Bank, encompassing his leadership through the 2008 financial crisis and its aftermath, will be a rich source of insight for the entire Stern community," said Peter Henry, dean of NYU Stern School of Business.
King's September-to-December stint in New York will see him swap continents with his successor Mark Carney, who moved from Canada to take up the reins of the Bank on July 1.

The Group of 20 (G20) nations, including South Africa, pledged on Saturday to put growth before austerity, seeking to revive a global economy that ?remains too weak? and adjusting stimulus policies with care so that recovery is not derailed by volatile financial markets.
Finance ministers and central bankers signed off on a communiqu? that acknowledged the benefits of expansive policies in the US and Japan but highlighted the recession in the euro zone and a slowdown in emerging markets.
?While our policy actions have contributed to contain downside risks, those still remain elevated,? the statement said. ?There has been an increase in financial market volatility and a tightening of conditions.?
Indications that the US Federal Reserve would scale back its monetary stimulus dominated the two-day talks in Moscow, with emerging markets most concerned by a resulting sell-off in stocks and bonds, and a flight to the dollar.
Host Russia said G20 policymakers had soft-pedalled on goals to cut government debt in favour of a focus on growth and how to exit from policies of central bank stimulus with a minimum of turmoil.
G20 ?colleagues have not made the decision to take responsibility to lower the deficits and debts by 2016?, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said. ?Some people thought that first you need to ensure economic growth.?
While the US recovery is gaining traction, China?s export motor is sputtering, Japan?s bid to break out of deflation has not reached escape velocity, and demand in the euro zone is too weak to sustain a job-creating recovery.
Officials backed an action plan to boost jobs and growth, while rebalancing global demand and debt. The plan will be ready for a G20 leaders? summit in September.
?We remain mindful of the risks and unintended negative side effects of extended periods of monetary easing,? the statement said.
?Future changes to monetary policy settings will continue to be carefully calibrated and clearly communicated.?
In return for its pledge to broadcast its monetary policy intentions clearly, Washington managed to ensure that the text contained no binding fiscal targets, saying that budget consolidation should be ?calibrated? to economic conditions.
Sources said Germany was less assertive than before over commitments to reduce borrowing to follow on from a deal struck in Toronto in 2010, with the improving US economy adding weight to Washington?s call to focus on growth.
The crisis in the euro zone periphery has been exacerbated by capital outflows, and the communiqu? pledged to move ?decisively? with reforms to create a banking union in Europe that could revive cross-border lending.
The International Monetary Fund warned that turbulence on global markets could deepen, while growth could be lower than expected due to stagnation in the euro zone and slowdown risks in the developing world.
?Global economic conditions remain challenging, growth is too weak, unemployment is too high and the recovery is too fragile,? managing director Christine Lagarde said. ?So more work is needed to improve this situation.?

REGION -- Do you hear that sound? The sweet ping of the bat, the pop of the mitt and, of course, the chanting and cheering of the young ballplayers. That's youth baseball at its finest. Parents line the baselines, offering positive encouragement for all players, no matter what uniform they are wearing.
About 10 years ago, baseball league directors from the surrounding towns of Shirley, Ayer, Groton Dunstable and Littleton decided to merge and form the MacIntosh League. Since then, the Mac League has welcomed new members.
"It spawned from small towns in the area who did not have a big enough program to support playing in town," said Ayer youth baseball director Jason Mayo. "They were looking for surrounding towns to get involved with and play games against. It made sense because they are all bordering towns and part of the same parent program, Cal Ripken."
When the league was started, town program directors were not sure about the type of success it would have.
"It worked out," Mayo said. "Everybody from the different towns had the same vision and the same goals in terms of youth sports. That (the Mac) went on with those main towns for about 10 years."
Recently, the Mac welcomed newcomers Townsend-Ashby and Pepperell to the league, after they switched over from Little League to Cal Ripken. The additions of Pepperell and Townsend-Ashby increased the number of games scheduled from 280 to 600.
"We went from about 26 teams up to 48
teams," said Shirley youth baseball president Terry Cooper. "It was a huge, huge increase in teams. It forced us to go into two divisions, which was very cool. We had an American and National division at all three levels."The unique thing about the Macintosh League is that every town gets its chance to be the league president.
"Each team coordinates the league and the schedule every year," Mayo said. "People have come and go, but there are a couple of holdovers who have been there for a while.
"Every year, even though there are different people that are involved, everybody comes in with the same visions and same attitudes. They may bring fresh ideas, which is good. That always helps to develop the league, you can't just stay stagnant."
In Cal Ripken baseball there are three levels: Minors (8- and 9-year-olds), Majors-60 (10- and 11-year-olds), and Majors-70 (11- and 12-year-olds.) Minors are the first time young players get a chance to face pitching from their peers.
"At the younger levels, they are out there learning to play and having fun," Mayo said. "They are playing real baseball; they are running the bases and keeping score. At that age, they are a little bit competitive. It doesn't matter if they win or lose. They could lose 14-0, but as soon as the game is over, they are having fun and want to go have a hot dog and a cotton candy at the concession stand."
Over the last half decade, lacrosse has started to pick up steam in the area. Town baseball programs such as Littleton and Groton have taken a large blow due to the popularity of lacrosse.
"Littleton and Groton have probably taken the biggest hit," Cooper said. "Four years ago, Littleton had six teams at every level. Now, they have a total of five teams in all three levels.
There is a huge drop in baseball around here due to lacrosse. Lacrosse is a fast-paced game and an hour-long practice or game, where baseball can be an hour and a half, two hours. (Baseball) is a slower, more safety-conscious game. "
For the time being, America's pastime is still thriving in the region, and Cooper said that is due in large part to the hands-off approach Cal Ripken Baseball headquarters takes.
"Cal Ripken allows the towns to do what they've got to do to survive," said Cooper. "Little League is restrictive on how they do things, in terms of you need to use their bats and follow their rules. Cal Ripken allows you to make your own rules. When things are restrictive, it kind of hurts your ability to make things easier for your players and the parents."
By bringing in Townsend-Ashby-Pepperell, the Macintosh League now is able to offer a more localized league for its Babe Ruth (13- to 15-year-old) players. When Groton left the Macintosh Babe Ruth league for the Minuteman, it put the local Babe Ruth league in a bind.
According to Cooper, there are few more gratifying things than hearing the bat of young ballplayer sing that sweet ping, or seeing a kid make a great play.
"For me, that's the ultimate," said Cooper. "When you work a season with one of those kids and all of sudden he makes a great play in the field he wouldn't have made at the beginning of the year, they light up. It's cool. They go nuts.
"As a coach, that's stuff that gets you jacked up. That's the kind of thing that makes you say, 'hey, OK, I spent the time with the right kid making sure he developed and had a successful season where he wants to come back and play baseball."
Baseball season is winding down in the region, as Groton U12 and Ayer-Shirley U10 are the last two teams competing at the Cal Ripken State Tourney this weekend in Northbridge.

STYLE AND TECHNIQUE MAKE AND BREAK PERCEPTIONS
Artist J.H. Williams III says that the artists who illustrate comic books can help change the way a reader perceives the story and have a "huge impact on how the story feels" as pages are turned, images examined and words read.
Williams, whose artwork on DC Entertainment's Batwoman is lush, thematic and flowing, is in the midst of illustrating Vertigo Comics' upcoming The Sandman Overture, working with writer Neil Gaiman to tell a prequel of sorts to the groundbreaking comic.
He said that seeing how visual styles affect reader impressions is what led him to "dabbling in so many different art styles within one story from scene to scene or sometimes from panel to panel. I'll shift the style based on what's happening in the story. It subliminally makes the reader view it in a different way."
Williams said that's only possible in the medium of comic art and, he said, "has a great impact on a story because of it."

You hit a 0.2 kg golf ball up at 40 degrees from the horizontal. It travels for 4.86 s and stops on an elevated green 10 m above its initial height traveling down at an angle of 35.4 degrees below the horizontal. What is the total impulse on the golf ball when it hits the ground and stops? (Follow up questions: What is the impulse on the ground? What information do you need to compute the total force on the golf ball?)
I appreciate any help that anyone can provide.
