Goodbye M&M's, hello granola bars as school snacks

(AP) ? Kids, your days of blowing off those healthier school lunches and filling up on cookies from the vending machine are numbered. The government is onto you.

For the first time, the Agriculture Department is telling schools what sorts of snacks they can sell. The new restrictions announced Thursday fill a gap in nutrition rules that allowed many students to load up on fat, sugar and salt despite the existing guidelines for healthy meals.

"Parents will no longer have to worry that their kids are using their lunch money to buy junk food and junk drinks at school," said Margo Wootan, a nutrition lobbyist for the Center for Science in the Public Interest who pushed for the new rules.

That doesn't mean schools will be limited to doling out broccoli and brussels sprouts.

Snacks that still make the grade include granola bars, low-fat tortilla chips, fruit cups and 100 percent fruit juice. And high school students can buy diet versions of soda, sports drinks and iced tea.

But say goodbye to some beloved school standbys, such as doughy pretzels, chocolate chip cookies and those little ice cream cups with their own spoons. Some may survive in low-fat or whole wheat versions. The idea is to weed out junk food and replace it with something with nutritional merit.

The bottom line, says Wootan: "There has to be some food in the food."

Still, 17-year-old Vanessa Herrera is partial to the Cheez-It crackers and sugar-laden Vitaminwater in her high school's vending machine. Granola bars and bags of peanuts? Not so much.

"I don't think anyone would eat it," said Herrera of Rockaway, N.J.

There are no vending machines at Lauren Jones' middle school in Hoover, Ala., but she said there's an "a la carte" stand that sells chips, ice cream and other snacks.

"Having something sweet to go with your meal is good sometimes," the 13-year-old said, although she also thinks that encouraging kids to eat healthier is worthwhile.

The federal snack rules don't take effect until the 2014-15 school year, but there's nothing to stop schools from making changes earlier.

Some students won't notice much difference. Many schools already are working to improve their offerings. Thirty-nine states have some sort of snack food policy in place.

Rachel Snyder, 17, said earlier this year her school in Washington, Ill., stripped its vending machines of sweets. She misses the pretzel-filled M&M's.

"If I want a sugary snack every now and then," Snyder said, "I should be able to buy it."

The federal rules put calorie, fat, sugar and sodium limits on almost everything sold during the day at 100,000 schools ? expanding on the previous rules for meals. The Agriculture Department sets nutritional standards for schools that receive federal funds to help pay for lunches, and that covers nearly every public school and about half of private ones.

One oasis of sweetness and fat will remain: Anything students bring from home, from bagged lunches to birthday cupcakes, is exempt from the rules.

The Agriculture Department was required to draw up the rules under a law passed by Congress in 2010, championed by first lady Michelle Obama, as part of the government's effort to combat childhood obesity.

Nutritional guidelines for subsidized lunches were revised last year and put in place last fall.

Last year's rules making main lunch fare more nutritious faced criticism from some conservatives, including some Republicans in Congress, who said the government shouldn't be telling kids what to eat. Mindful of that backlash, the Agriculture Department left one of the more controversial parts of the rule, the regulation of in-school fundraisers like bake sales, up to the states.

The rules have the potential to transform what many children eat at school.

In addition to meals already subject to nutrition standards, most lunchrooms also have "a la carte" lines that sell other foods ? often greasy foods like mozzarella sticks and nachos. That gives students a way to circumvent the healthy lunches. Under the rules, those lines could offer healthier pizzas, low-fat hamburgers, fruit cups or yogurt and similar fare.

One of the biggest changes will be a near-ban on high-calorie sports drinks. Many beverage companies added sports drinks to school vending machines after sodas were pulled in response to criticism from the public health community.

The rule would only allow sales in high schools of sodas and sports drinks that contain 60 calories or less in a 12-ounce serving, banning the highest-calorie versions of those beverages.

Low-calorie sports drinks ? Gatorade's G2, for example ? and diet drinks will be allowed in high school.

Elementary and middle schools will be allowed to sell only water, carbonated water, 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice, and low fat and fat-free milk, including nonfat flavored milks.

Republicans have continued to scrutinize the efforts to make school foods healthier, and at a House subcommittee hearing Thursday, Rep. Todd Rokita, R-Ind., said the "stringent rules are creating serious headaches for schools and students."

One school nutritionist testified that her school has had difficulty adjusting to the 2012 changes, and the new "a la carte" standards could also be a hardship.

The healthier foods are expensive, said Sandra Ford, president of the School Nutrition Association and director of food and nutrition services for a school district in Bradenton, Fla. She also predicted that her school district could lose $975,000 a year under the new "a la carte" guidelines because they would have to eliminate many of the popular foods they sell.

In a report released at the hearing, the Government Accountability Office said that in some districts students were having trouble adjusting to the new foods, leading to increased waste and kids dropping out of the school lunch program.

The food industry has been onboard with many of the changes, and several companies worked with Congress on the child nutrition law three years ago.

Angela Chieco, a mother from Clifton Park, N.Y., sees the guidelines as a good start but says it will take a bigger campaign to wean kids off junk food.

"I try to do less sugar myself," Chieco said. "It's hard to do."

Local Business Reviews Read By 85% of Consumers [Survey ...

BrightLocal has revealed insights from their new?consumer review survey looking at local search. Not surprisingly, the usage of local search has increased over the past couple of years, as well as the types of businesses that people are searching for. What is surprising is how people are using local search, and it might not be what you would automatically think of.

    use-internet-to-find-local-business-brightlocal-2013

Despite a large increase of numbers of users who are using the Internet to find local businesses when comparing numbers from 2011 to 2012, the startling fact is how small the actual usage of the Internet on a weekly or daily basis is. In fact over 30 percent of respondents stated that they have only used the Internet between two and five times in the previous 12 months to find a local business.

Even when compared to the 15 percent who use the Internet on a weekly basis to find local business and the 7 percent who use it on a daily basis, it is still pretty surprising about the lack of Internet adoption by those trying to find local businesses in a day and age when many local businesses are dropping Yellow Pages and newspaper advertisements.

    business-types-searched-for-brightlocal-2013

What are people using local search for?

Restaurants and caf?s are far in the lead, with nearly 70 percent of respondents stating that they have used the Internet to find a restaurant or caf? in the last 12 months. General shops, hotels/B&B/Guest Houses, clothing shops, and doctors/dentist were all in the top five.

    read-online-reviews-brightlocal-2013

Consumers seem to be taking online customer reviews into consideration when searching for local businesses, with 85 percent of consumers saying they do read online reviews for local businesses and more than 60 percent reading reviews for restaurants and caf?s.

What is good news for local businesses is the fact that not many people are just reading the first review for a local business. More than 60 percent read between two and six online reviews before they form an opinion on the business.

But despite the prevalence of local business marketing, people are far more likely to recommend a business through word-of-mouth rather than online. But what is interesting is it has declined over the last year, with about 75 percent recommending a local business through word-of-mouth in 2012 and down to about 72 percent in 2013.

Of the online recommendations, Facebook was the clear winner. Slightly more than 35 percent recommended a local business on Facebook, which is an increase from 31 percent in 2012. Google+ and Twitter are both slightly under 15 percent with Twitter gaining much more ground over the past year.

Texas woman set to be 500th execution in state

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) ? Texas, the nation's busiest death penalty state, is set to mark a solemn moment in criminal justice Wednesday with the execution of convicted killer Kimberly McCarthy.

If McCarthy is put to death in Huntsville as planned, she would become the 500th person executed in Texas since the state resumed carrying out the death penalty in 1982. The 52-year-old also would be the first woman executed in the U.S. since 2010.

McCarthy's attorney, Maurie Levin, said she has exhausted all efforts to block the execution, after denials by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.

"If there was something to appeal, I would," said Levin.

Texas has carried out nearly 40 percent of the more than 1,300 executions in U.S. since the Supreme Court allowed capital punishment to resume in 1976. The state's standing stems from its size as the nation's second most populous state as well as its tradition of tough justice for killers.

With increased debate in recent years over wrongful convictions, some states have halted the practice entirely. However, 32 states have the death penalty on the books. Still, it's clear the debate over capital punishment has touched Texas, with lawmakers providing more sentencing options for juries and courts narrowing the cases for which death can be sought.

McCarthy faces execution for the 1997 robbery, beating and fatal stabbing of retired college psychology professor Dorothy Booth. Booth had agreed to give McCarthy a cup of sugar before she was attacked with a butcher knife at her home in Lancaster, about 15 miles south of Dallas. Authorities say McCarthy cut off Booth's finger to remove her wedding ring.

Police also had linked two other slayings to McCarthy, a former nursing home therapist who became addicted to crack cocaine.

In her appeals, McCarthy contended prosecutors improperly excluded black jurors and that her lawyers failed to challenge the moves at trial or in early appeals. McCarthy is black, and Booth was white. All but one of the 12 jurors at McCarthy's trial were white.

In January, McCarthy had been moved to a small holding cell a few steps from the Texas death chamber when a Dallas judge moved her execution to April. That timing then was reset for June when Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins said he wanted to await the outcome of capital punishment-related bills before lawmakers in Austin.

On Tuesday, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals declined to reconsider its denial a day earlier of McCarthy's appeal, saying her claims should have been raised previously.

Levin, a University of Texas law professor, said because the court's ruling focused on a procedural and not a substantive issue, the case cannot be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"The shameful errors that plague Ms. McCarthy's case ? race bias, ineffective counsel and courts unwilling to exercise meaningful oversight of the system ? reflect problems that are central to the administration of the death penalty as a whole. For this to be the emblem of Texas' 500th execution is something all Texans should be ashamed of," Levin said.

McCarthy declined to speak with reporters as her execution date neared.

Anti-death penalty groups planned to protest outside the Walls Unit in Huntsville, where McCarthy is set to receive a lethal injection Wednesday evening.

"The whole world is looking at Texas," said Gloria Rubac, with the Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement in Houston.

McCarthy would be the 13th woman nationwide and the fourth in Texas put to death since 1976. In the same period, more than 1,300 men have been executed nationwide, 496 of them in Texas. Virginia is a distant second, nearly 400 executions behind.

Federal statistics show that over the past three decades women account for about 10 percent of convicted murderers. According to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, there were 63 women on death row in the U.S. as of Jan. 1, representing 2 percent of the nation's 3,125 condemned prisoners.

Prosecutors showed that McCarthy stole Booth's Mercedes and drove to Dallas, pawned the wedding ring she had removed from the woman's severed finger for $200 and then went to a crack house to buy cocaine. Evidence also showed she used Booth's credit cards at a liquor store.

Booth's DNA was found on a 10-inch butcher knife recovered from McCarthy's home.

McCarthy blamed the crime on two drug dealers, but there was no evidence either existed.

Blood DNA evidence also tied McCarthy to the December 1988 slayings of 81-year-old Maggie Harding and 85-year-old Jettie Lucas. Harding was stabbed and beaten with a meat tenderizer, while Lucas was beaten with both sides of a claw hammer and stabbed.

McCarthy, who denied any involvement in the attacks, was indicted but not tried for those slayings.

McCarthy is a former wife of Aaron Michaels, founder of the New Black Panther Party, and he testified on her behalf. They had separated before Booth's slaying.

Shares, dollar gain after GDP data eases Fed fears

    By Herbert Lash

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The dollar rose and global equity markets gained for a second day on Wednesday after a surprisingly sharp downward revision to first-quarter U.S. economic growth eased concerns the Federal Reserve might soon begin to withdraw stimulus.

In addition, moves by China to calm bank fears and supportive signs from the European Central Bank on the need for continued stimulus helped extend Tuesday's rebound after the global sell-off of stocks, commodities and bonds last week.

U.S. gross domestic product grew at only a 1.8 percent annual rate in the first quarter, the Commerce Department said in its final estimate, down from the prior estimate of a 2.4 percent pace.

The benchmark S&P 500 stock index was on track for its biggest two-day gain in three weeks, cutting the decline since its all-time closing high a month ago to 3.95 percent.

"Despite all the rhetoric and fear about tapering, this will keep the Fed firmly planted in stimulus, which is a positive for the market," said Michael Mullaney, chief investment officer at Fiduciary Trust Co in Boston, which oversees about $9.5 billion.

"This is another example of bad news being good news."

European stocks gained close to 2 percent to post their biggest two-day gain since April after ECB president Mario Draghi said an accommodative monetary policy was still appropriate. The bank's policy "will stay accommodative for the foreseeable future," he said.

MSCI's all-country world equity index <.miwd00000pus> rose 0.96 percent, while the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of leading regional companies gained 1.71 percent to close at 1,149.71 points. The EuroSTOXX 50 index <.stoxx50e> rose 2.34 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> closed up 149.83 points, or 1.02 percent, at 14,910.14. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> rose 15.23 points, or 0.96 percent, at 1,603.26. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> gained 28.34 points, or 0.85 percent, at 3,376.22.

The S&P 500's advance followed a gain of nearly 1 percent on Tuesday, spurred after U.S. data on durable goods orders, sales of new homes and consumer confidence all topped expectations.

A pledge by China's central bank, the People's Bank of China, to act as a lender of last resort was the story of the day on Wednesday, said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at The Davidson Cos in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

"The global fears regarding the possibility of a Chinese credit situation spilling over and becoming very serious has eased off some," he said. The People's Bank "is going to come in and make sure the Chinese banking system doesn't collapse."

Gold hit its lowest in almost three years and was on course for a record quarterly loss. Prices could slide to levels below $1,000 per ounce, investors and analysts said. Silver dropped 5 percent and platinum group metals also declined sharply.

Spot gold prices fell $53.03 to $1,223.70 an ounce. U.S. gold futures for August delivery settled down $45.30 at $1,229.80.

Bond markets in Europe and benchmark U.S. Treasuries continued to claw back ground, although investors remained worried the rebound could give way with markets likely to need more time to acclimatize to the new environment.

U.S. Treasuries gained after a recent slump took yields to near two-year highs, with the weaker-than-expected GDP pointing to continued potential for fragility in the world's biggest economy.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 17/32 in price to yield 2.5465 percent.

Euro zone bonds rose across the board on the ECB's pledge to keep exceptional monetary policy measures for the foreseeable future.

German Bund futures came off 8-month lows on Monday of 139.90 to settle up 49 ticks at 141.03.

If economic data is weak, "the punch bowl stays where it is. Good news, economically, the punch bowl gets moved a little bit further away," said Wilmer Stith, co-manager of the Wilmington Broad Market Bond Fund in Baltimore.

Oil prices traded near break-even after data showed an unexpected rise in U.S. crude stocks, which combined with the GDP report, stoked concerns about the outlook for demand in the world's top consumer.

Brent crude for August delivery rose 40 cents to settle at $101.66 a barrel. U.S. crude settled up 18 cents at $95.50 a barrel.

The euro was down 0.60 percent at $1.3005, stung by Draghi's comments on an accommodative monetary policy and the risks to growth in the euro zone.

"Juxtaposed against shifting Fed policy, (Draghi's comment) highlights that relative central bank policy will soon shift from supporting to weighing on the euro," said Camilla Sutton, chief FX strategist at Scotiabank.

The dollar rose to a three-week high of 83.003 against a basket of currencies <.dxy>, buoyed mainly by solid gains against the euro. It later was up 0.48 percent at 82.958.

Snowden whereabouts unknown as Russia defies U.S. pressure

By Lidia Kelly and Katya Golubkova

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden's whereabouts were a mystery on Monday as Russia defied White House pressure to send him back to the United States and stop him fleeing Moscow on his globe-crossing escape from U.S. prosecution.

Snowden, whose exposure of secret U.S. government surveillance raised questions about intrusions into private lives, was allowed to leave Hong Kong on Sunday after Washington had asked the Chinese territory to arrest him on espionage charges.

The 30-year-old flew to Moscow as a transit stop before heading elsewhere, several sources said. But reports that he would fly to Cuba were put in doubt when witnesses could not see him on the plane, despite heightened security before take-off.

Ecuador, which has sheltered the founder of the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy group, Julian Assange, said it was considering Snowden's request for asylum and that human rights were it main concern. There are no direct commercial flights to Quito from Moscow.

"He didn't take the flight (to Havana)," a source at Russia's national airline Aeroflot told Reuters.

As speculation grew about where he would go next - Ecuador, Venezuela or Cuba at a later date to escape the crowd of journalists aboard Monday's flight to Havana - Washington was stung by Russian defiance.

Snowden's flight to Russia, which like China challenges U.S. dominance of global diplomacy, is an embarrassment to President Barack Obama who has tried to "reset" ties with Moscow and build a partnership with Beijing.

The White House said it expected the Russian government to send Snowden back to the United States and lodged "strong objections" to Hong Kong and China for letting him go.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said during a visit to India that it would be "deeply troubling" if Moscow defied the United States over Snowden, and said the fugitive "places himself above the law, having betrayed his country".

But the Russian government ignored the appeal and President Vladimir Putin's press secretary denied any knowledge of Snowden's movements.

Asked if Snowden had spoken to the Russian authorities, Peskov said: "Overall, we have no information about him."

He declined comment on the expulsion request but other Russian officials said Moscow had no obligation to cooperate with Washington, after it passed legislation to impose visa bans and asset freezes on Russians accused of violating human rights.

    U.S. HYPOCRISY

"Why should the United States expect restraint and understanding from Russia?" said Alexei Pushkov, the head of the foreign affairs committee in the lower house of parliament.

Putin has missed few chances to champion public figures who challenge Western governments and to portray Washington as an overzealous global policeman. But Russian leaders have not paraded Snowden before cameras or trumpeted his arrival.

Since leaving Hong Kong, where he feared arrest and extradition, Snowden has been searching for a country that can guarantee his security.

Ecuador's foreign minister, Ricardo Patino, said during a trip to Vietnam that Quito would take into account a U.S. request about Snowden and is in "respectful" contact with Russia about him. He gave no details of the U.S. request.

"We will consider the position of the U.S. government and we will take a decision in due course in line with the (Ecuadorean) constitution, the laws, international politics and sovereignty," Patino told a news conference in Hanoi.

A source at Aeroflot said on Sunday Snowden was booked on the flight due to depart for Havana on Monday at 2:05 p.m. (1005 GMT). But a correspondent aboard could not see him and the seat he was supposed to occupy, 17A, was taken by another passenger.

It was not immediately clear whether the plane had a crew section where Snowden might have been concealed.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer said Putin had probably known about and approved Snowden's flight to Russia, and saw "the hand of Beijing" in Hong Kong's decision to let Snowden leave.

But taking the higher ground after being accused of hacking computers abroad, the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed "grave concern" over Snowden's allegations that the United States had hacked computers in China. It said it had taken up the issue with Washington.

    CHILL

Some Russians have praised Snowden's revelations. Others fear a new chill in relations with the United States.

"We are a pretty stubborn country and so is the United States. Both are mighty countries, so I would say this has a good potential to turn into a big fuss in bilateral relations," said Ina Sosna, manager of a Moscow cleaning company.

"I guess it would be best if they just let him move on from Russia to avoid any more controversy over him being here."

Snowden was assisted in his escape from Hong Kong by WikiLeaks, whose founder Assange said he had helped to arrange documents from Ecuador. WikiLeaks said diplomats and Sarah Harrison, a legal researcher working for the anti-secrecy group, accompanied him.

Ecuador, like Cuba and Venezuela, is a member of the ALBA bloc, an alliance of leftist governments in Latin America that pride themselves on their "anti-imperialist" credentials. The Quito government has been sheltering Assange at its London embassy for the past year.

Snowden, who had worked at a U.S. National Security Agency facility in Hawaii, had been hiding in Hong Kong, a former British colony that returned to China in 1997, since leaking details about secret U.S. surveillance programs to news media.

He has been charged with theft of federal government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence to an unauthorized person, with the latter two charges falling under the U.S. Espionage Act.

US boss held by Chinese workers awaits outcome

BEIJING (AP) ? An American executive held in his Beijing medical supply plant by angry workers says he's waiting for his lawyers to arrive to resolve a compensation dispute that highlights tensions in China's labor market.

Chip Starnes was enduring a fifth day of captivity Tuesday at the factory that makes products for Coral Springs, Florida-based Specialty Medical Supplies.

About 100 workers are demanding generous severance packages identical to those offered 30 workers being laid-off from the company's plastics division. The demands followed rumors the entire plant was being closed, despite Starnes' assertion the company doesn't plan to fire the others.

Union official Chu Lixiang said the workers were demanding unpaid salary and "fair or reasonable" compensation. Securing severance is a primary concern among workers often left unprotected when factories close.

Rotation-resistant rootworms owe their success to gut microbes

June 24, 2013 ? Researchers say they now know what allows some Western corn rootworms to survive crop rotation, a farming practice that once effectively managed the rootworm pests. The answer to the decades-long mystery of rotation-resistant rootworms lies -- in large part -- in the rootworm gut, the team reports.

The findings appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Differences in the relative abundance of certain bacterial species in the rootworm gut help the adult rootworm beetles feed on soybean leaves and tolerate the plant's defenses a little better, the researchers report. This boost in digestive finesse allows rotation-resistant beetles to survive long enough to lay their eggs in soybean fields. Their larvae emerge the following spring and feast on the roots of newly planted corn.

"These insects, they have only one generation per year," said University of Illinois entomology department senior scientist Manfredo Seufferheld, who led the study. "And yet within a period of about 20 years in Illinois they became resistant to crop rotation. What allowed this insect to adapt so fast? These bacteria, perhaps."

Controlling rootworms is an expensive concern faced by all Midwest corn growers, said study co-author Joseph Spencer, an insect behaviorist at the Illinois Natural History Survey (part of the Prairie Research Institute at the U. of I.). Yield losses, the use of insecticides and corn hybrids engineered to express rootworm-killing toxins in their tissues cost U.S. growers at least $1 billion a year.

In a 2012 study, Seufferheld, Spencer and their colleagues reported that rotation-resistant rootworm beetles were better able than their nonresistant counterparts to tolerate the defensive chemicals produced in soybeans leaves. This allowed the beetles to feed more and survive longer on soybean plants. The researchers found that levels of key digestive enzymes differed significantly between the rotation-resistant and nonresistant rootworms, but differences in the expression of the genes encoding these enzymes did not fully explain the rotation-resistant beetles' advantage. Seufferheld and his colleagues thought that microbes in the rootworms' guts might be helping them better tolerate life in a soybean field.

To test this hypothesis, graduate student Chia-Ching Chu analyzed the population of microbes living in the guts of rootworm beetles collected from seven sites across the Midwest. Some of these sites (including Piper City, Ill.) are hot spots of rotation-resistance and others (in Nebraska and northwest Missouri, for example) lack evidence of rotation-resistant rootworms.

Chu found significant and consistent differences in the relative abundance of various types of bacteria in the guts of rotation-resistant and nonresistant rootworms (see graphic). These differences corresponded to differing activity levels of digestive enzymes in their guts and to their ability to tolerate soybean plant defenses.

The researchers found other parallels between the composition of gut microbes and the life history of the rootworms. The beetles' gut microbial structure corresponded to the insects' level of activity (rotation-resistant rootworms are usually more active), and also paralleled -- in a graduated fashion -- the plant diversity of the landscapes they inhabited. (Rotation-resistant rootworms are most abundant in regions where rotated corn and soybean fields are the dominant components of the agricultural landscape.)

To determine whether the microbes were in fact giving the rotation-resistant beetles an advantage, the researchers dosed the beetles with antibiotics. Low-level exposure to antibiotics had no effect on any of the beetles, but at higher doses the rotation-resistant beetles' survival time on soybean leaves fell to that of the nonresistant beetles. Antibiotics also lowered the activity of digestive enzymes in the rotation-resistant beetles' guts to that of their nonresistant counterparts.

The message of the research, Seufferheld said, is that the gut microbes are not just passive residents of the rootworm gut.

"They are very active players in the adaptation of the insect," he said. "The microbial community acts as a versatile multicellular organ."

"It's not just the rootworm that we have to worry about," Spencer said. "There's really this whole conspiracy between the rootworm and its co-conspirators in the gut that can respond fairly quickly, relatively speaking, to the assaults that they face."

The research team also included former postdoctoral researcher Jorge Zavala (now a professor at the University of Buenos Aires) and graduate student Matias Curzi.

Blue Jays win 11th straight, beat Orioles 13-5

TORONTO (AP) ? These are the Toronto Blue Jays Edwin Encarnacion expected after a busy offseason.

Encarnacion homered and drove in four runs, Josh Johnson earned his first win of the season and the Blue Jays matched a team record by winning their 11th straight game Sunday, finishing a three-game sweep of Baltimore with a 13-5 win.

The Blue Jays have gone 28-15 since May 2, when they were a season-worst 10-21. They've won 15 of their past 18, outscoring their opponents 102-52 in that span.

"I've been waiting for this since the season started," Encarnacion said. "I believe in this team so I knew things had to change, things had to become good for us. That's the way right now and we enjoy it, enjoy the moment. I'm not surprised by this. I know this team is good and I know we can do it."

Toronto has swept three consecutive series for the first time since 1998, the last time they won 11 straight. The Blue Jays also won 11 consecutive games in 1987.

"Everybody is doing their job, everybody is pitching in," Johnson said. "It's been impressive."

Playing before a sellout crowd of 45,214, Toronto became the first team since Detroit in 2011 to win 11 straight.

"We're feeling pretty good about ourselves," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "We shut down a really good team over there."

The Blue Jays, who begin a three-game series at Tampa Bay on Monday, have not lost since a 10-6 defeat at the Chicago White Sox on June 10.

"A lot of guys have been in a good rhythm at the same time, which is kind of what we didn't have to start the season," catcher J.P. Arencibia said.

Ryan Flaherty hit two homers but Baltimore lost for the fifth time in eight games and allowed a season high in runs.

"We ran into a good team and came up short," Flaherty said.

Johnson (1-2) was winless in his first seven starts with Toronto, receiving just 13 total runs of support and losing twice. That changed Sunday, as the Blue Jays helped the right-hander with an early offensive barrage, scoring nine times in the first three innings.

Johnson allowed four runs and seven hits in six-plus innings, walked one and struck out five. He's 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in four starts since missing 31 games with a right triceps injury, and has struck out 25 batters in his past 25 1-3 innings.

"It's not an easy lineup to face regardless of the score," Gibbons said. "That's another good outing for him. That's one win. Getting on the board so you've got something to show for it always makes you feel good."

Aaron Loup, Juan Perez and Dustin McGowan each worked one inning.

Flaherty hit a two-run shot off Johnson in the seventh and a solo homer off McGowan in the ninth for his first career multihomer game. He has five home runs this season.

With first base open, the Blue Jays intentionally walked Orioles slugger Chris Davis to load the bases for Matt Wieters in the first, but Johnson got Wieters to foul out.

"Every time you turn on the highlights he's doing some damage somewhere," Gibbons said of Davis. "We've seen plenty of that. That's key, getting out of that first inning without any runs."

Arencibia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom half to drive in the game's first run.

The Blue Jays used small ball and the long ball to score three more in the second. Emilio Bonifacio led off with a bunt single over the head of Baltimore starter Freddy Garcia, stole second and went to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on Melky Cabrera's sacrifice fly. Jose Bautista walked and Encarnacion followed with a first-pitch homer to left.

Toronto blew it open with a five-run, bat-around third. Maicer Izturis and Bonifacio chased Garcia with back-to-back RBI doubles, bringing left-hander T.J. McFarland out of the bullpen. One out later, Cabrera singled home a run, Bautista walked and Encarnacion hit a two-run double.

Baltimore broke through against Johnson in the fifth, when Manny Machado led off with his ML-leading 34th double and scored on a double by Nick Markakis. Markakis went to third on Adam Jones' grounder and scored when Davis reached on Bonifacio's fielding error. Davis was credited with an RBI.

Flaherty's two-run homer made it 9-4 but Toronto answered with four in the bottom half. Colby Rasmus led off with a homer against McFarland, his 14th, and Bautista hit a bases-loaded double off Pedro Strop.

Garcia (3-5) had won his previous two outings in Toronto but lost for the third time in four starts. He allowed a season-worst seven runs and seven hits in 2 1-3 innings, his shortest start of the year.

"I made some good pitches and they just hit them," Garcia said. "Right now everything is going good for them. It's part of the game. You can't do anything about it."

Machado thought he'd fouled Johnson's strike three pitch into the dirt when he struck out in the first. After plate ump Doug Eddings checked the ball and upheld the call, Orioles manager Buck Showalter came out to see the ball for himself.

NOTES: Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos told MLB Network Radio that SS Jose Reyes (left ankle) will play one more rehab game at Triple-A Buffalo on Monday, then will likely join Double-A New Hampshire when Buffalo goes on the road. Anthopoulos said Reyes might not rejoin the Blue Jays until Thursday in Boston. ... Arencibia had three hits and scored twice. ... Blue Jays cleanup hitter Adam Lind has base hits in each of his past seven first inning at-bats, including two home runs. ... Toronto RHP Kyle Drabek (elbow surgery) allowed two runs and five hits in 2 1-3 innings in his first rehab start at Class-A Dunedin on Saturday. Drabek struck out two, walked none and allowed a home run.

A valve inside a valve: A new heart valve can be implanted in people suffering with adult congenital heart disease without open heart surgery

June 24, 2013 ? Many adult congenital heart patients have undergone multiple heart surgeries by the time they reach their 20s. Each time surgeons operate on the heart, the risk of complications increases. A new valve recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration, now gives these patients a new way to manage their disease without having to undergo open heart surgery.

Many adults with congenital heart disease are born with a malformation of the pulmonary valve, which sits between the heart and lungs. Most have undergone open heart surgery during childhood to restore blood flow to the lungs, and often require a second and third open heart surgery to replace this valve. Because of advancements in heart surgery over the past 50 years, more and more of these patients are making it to the adulthood for the first time in history.

The new Melody Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve, which is delivered through a catheter and requires only a small incision, is a new technique that is bringing new hope to these patients.

The first Melody Valve at Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center in Houston was recently implanted by Dr. C. Huie Lin, an adult congenital heart disease specialist, in a young man who had already had three open heart surgeries for congenital heart disease.

"More than a million people live with adult congenital heart disease in the U.S., and we expect that number to grow by 5 percent each year," Lin said. "I believe this new Melody Valve is a great new option for people who were no longer candidates for surgery."

Lin said the Melody Valve helps patients who have already had an open heart surgery for congenital heart disease and have developed problems with the valve leaking or becoming blocked.

The valve, made for the right side of the heart, is designed to be implanted inside of the existing valve. Made from the internal jugular vein of a cow, the valve is sewn onto a stent and the stent is then put onto a balloon catheter. The catheter is then placed through the femoral vein and advanced to the pulmonary valve position. The balloon then expands and deploys the valve.

"Because it's implanted inside of an existing valve, a new Melody valve can also be implanted in an existing Melody valve if it's not working properly," Lin said. "It's a revolutionary technique."

Lin says many adults with congenital heart disease are operated on at a very young age and some, for one reason or another, are unaware of their condition until they begin to experience shortness of breath, lightheadedness, palpitations or swelling as adults. He adds that it's important for these patients to see an adult congenital heart specialist before these signs and symptoms occur so they can maintain an active lifestyle and great quality of life.

Bruins lose Bergeron, fall to Blackhawks in Game 5

CHICAGO (AP) ? Patrice Bergeron left the arena in an ambulance. The Bruins headed home on the brink of elimination.

Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals didn't go according to plan for Boston, with Patrick Kane scoring two goals to lift the Chicago Blackhawks to a 3-1 victory and 3-2 series lead on Saturday night.

The Bruins must win at home on Monday night to force a seventh game and keep their hopes alive for a second championship in three years.

"We're going to fight," David Krejci said. "We're going to fight with everything we have and force Game 7."

It would help if they had Bergeron. But their top forward's status is in question after he was taken to a hospital in an ambulance with an undisclosed injury.

That happened after he skated gingerly off the ice after playing just two shifts in the second period, and coach Claude Julien didn't say much about it afterward.

He would not reveal how it happened or any other details. He did say Bergeron "may be in the next game," but brushed aside further questions.

"Guys, I'm not going there, so anything else but injury here," Julien said. "I'll update you when I have an update. There's nothing more. We can ask a million questions. I don't have any more information than probably you guys do right now."

The Bruins don't have much more time, either.

What they do have is a history of fighting back when they're close to being knocked out.

"We've been down this road before," Krejci said. "In past years, we've been missing some key players and other players that (were) at the top. This is the time of the year when other guys are going to step up and you know it's do-or-die for us."

They were in several tough spots in 2011, only to keep rallying on the way to the championship.

They opened the playoffs that year with back-to-back losses to Montreal but won that series in seven games. In the Stanley Cup finals, they trailed 2-0 and 3-2 before rallying to beat Vancouver for their sixth title.

This year, they nearly got knocked off in the first round after jumping out to a 3-1 series lead against Toronto. They dropped the next two games and were down three in the third period in Game 7 before rallying to win that series, and their resolve is being tested again by the Blackhawks.

"We've been there before and done well in that situation," Julien said. "Right now, our goal is to create a Game 7. And to create a Game 7, we've got to win a Game 6. We've been good at home, and we need to be good at home the next game. It's as simple as that. There's no panic. You're not going to push us away that easy."

The problem is the Bruins are facing a team that dominated like no other this season, getting off to a record start on the way to finishing with the most points in the NHL.

The Bruins got a solid performance in goal from Tuukka Rask, who had 29 saves coming off a 6-5 overtime loss, but Chicago dictated the tempo, particularly in the second period.

That changed down the stretch, even without Bergeron on the ice.

"It's kind of sad that you had to lose a guy like that to wake the team up and start battling out there," Rask said. "You're in the finals, you play 20 minutes and that's not going to be good enough to get you a hockey game. We have to realize that. Now we're going to have some new bodies, some new lines and everybody needs to put 110 percent in and leave their hearts on the ice."

The Bruins looked like they might be building some momentum when Zdeno Chara fired a bullet from the left circle past Corey Crawford's glove to cut the deficit to one early in the third.

They nearly tied it with 2:20 left, only to have Crawford stop Jaromir Jagr after the puck careened around in front of the net, and the Blackhawks hung on from there.

Now, the Bruins are simply trying to hang on, period.

"We've been through it before, but it doesn't help to think about what happened in the past," Rask said. "We have to live in the moment. We have to be ready on Monday, get the first win. And Game 7, if that happens, it's going to be up for grabs."

The dangers of substandard ICT and electronic products ...

Download PDFUchendu Amuta writes that the rapid growth of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector came with the dumping of very poor quality computer and mobile phone accessroies in the country. He prays that the fresh government initiative to deal with the issue of substandard IT products yield the desired result. ?49989410

Rapid growth in the nation?s Information Communication Technology (ICT) market over the past decade has thrown up various challenges in the market. One of such is the abundance of fake and substandard goods and accessories; a situation that has eaten so deep into the fabrics of the sector and may destroy it if unchecked.

The influx of fake and substandard products cut across all market segments of the sector. From telecommunications to computers/laptops, software to CDs and other accessories, the menace has assumed alarming levels. Who bears the brunt? Genuine equipment manufacturers, network operators? consumers and the economy in general, all are prone to the evils associated with the sale and usage of fake products in the sector.

The combined efforts of the two regulatory agencies, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) appear to have done little or nothing in checkmating the continued influx of such goods.

One can only hope that the recent effort by the federal government through SON by setting up a special task force against substandard products yields the desired result. The task force established in conjunction with a private firm, Christabel International Company, should by now gone into action as it work is billed to start in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and environs from June 5, 2013.

The damage done to the economy by fake products could only be imagined. Joseph Odumodu, the director general of SON disclosed recently that Nigerians waste over N500 million on purchase of substandard electric bulbs annually, adding that the bulbs barely last for two hours instead of the expected 1,000 hours. If this is lost to just fake bulbs, Nigerians imagine the colossal loss on all the fake products combined.

    GSM handsets and accessories

sony_ericsson_xperia_mini_proGSM handset boom bust came alongside rapid growth in the telecommunications market that started in August 2001 with the introduction of Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) in the country. The digital mobile phone service almost immediately opened up the handset market

The handset market is very huge, estimated at over N500 billion. It is also estimated that more than 50 per cent of phone users in the country must have replaced their handsets more than once and 25 per cent of users own two or more phone handsets.? Phone users are in excess of 116million in the country currently.

Unfortunately, fake/substandard handsets have taken over this huge and potential market. World biggest phone manufacturers such as Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, BlackBerry, Sony Ericsson, Phillips, Huawei, ZTE and LG, alongside other names are imported into the country with the fakes overshadowing the genuine ones.

The influx pushed NCC to up to date type approve over 57 handset models as qualified to be used? for the Nigerian market. The commission empowered by the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 to establish and enforce standards for all telecommunications equipment in operation in Nigeria to ensure that they operate seamlessly and safely within the country?s telecom environment.

Consequently, all equipment manufacturers, vendors and operators, including customer devices such as mobile phone handsets must ensure that their equipment conform to the applicable standards as mandated by the commission before they are brought into the country.

However, the regulation has yielded little result as a large number of mobile phones that are not type approved by NCC and mostly substandard continue to find their way into the market.

The same goes for phone accessories such as chargers, batteries, memory cards and external speaker phones.

Before they can be sold in each market all models of genuine phones are tested to ensure they are safe for users, including testing to make sure they meet national and international standards for exposure to radiofrequency emissions.

All mobile phone batteries and chargers must undergo the same stringent testing to ensure they meet all levels of safety. Genuine mobile phone batteries are tested under intense conditions to ensure they can handle varying conditions of use.

Fake and substandard mobile phones, batteries and chargers on the other hand are not subject to such comprehensive testing and therefore the safety of fake phones cannot be verified or guaranteed.

Media reports world-wide indicate incidents where mobile phone batteries have exploded and injured people. Upon investigation these incidents have been linked back to the use of fake or sub-standard batteries. Fake and some third party manufactured batteries do not meet all of the safety requirements that prevent these incidents.? Non-genuine batteries may not have safety circuits which regulate voltage, current and heat within the battery and without these the battery can short circuit and explode or heat up and burn people.

Experts further disclosed that fake phones, batteries and chargers are made from cheap substandard components and may contain chemicals, which are dangerous to the environment and human health.

The cheap and low quality components used to manufacture fake phones and accessories are untested, uncertified and can be a safety hazard for users. The substandard components in fake phones often malfunction with the potential to injure users and damage property.

Fake phones can also contain dangerous chemicals and metals, such as lead and mercury. These are associated with a range of adverse health effects.

The poor performances of the handsets mostly imported from China have made Nigeria becoming a dumping ground and one of the biggest destinations of fake phones in the world. Experts posit that porous borders and the penchant for cheap, flashy products by Nigerians are major reasons for the market.

Since such handsets bribe their way or come through unofficial channels they rob the country of tax revenue aside many other dangerous consequences. a stress the network through weak signals and irregular performances, come with health hazards including electric shocks, are not durable and are sort of financial stress on Nigerians.

Most importantly, the market constitutes a huge disincentive to genuine investors into the GSM handset market. This may well explain why despites huge market and potential, no handset maker is attracted to establish even an assembly plant for GSM handsets in the country.

A source at Computer Village in Lagos where the bulk of these sub-standard and fake phone handsets are sold confided on ManufacturingToday that such phones do not emanate from genuine factories of the brand owners. According to him, what most importers of that category of phones do is to collaborate with some factories in China and India to mass produce hot brands in the country with specifications below what obtains in the original in order to minimize cost.

?Such phones even sell faster than the original ones because they come far cheaper than those from original manufacturers. In some cases, they sell the phones to unsuspecting customers as original?, he explained.

Renowned makers such as Nokia are not sleeping over the issue. Worried by the flooding of fake mobile handsets in Ghana and other West African countries, Nokia has since launch a campaign to fight the menace of fake phones. Nokia?s General Manager, Sales, for Ghana and Senegal, Ludovic Falcuo disclosed that the main objectives of the campaign is to highlight the health and economic implications of using a fake phone.

??Fake mobile handsets were often manufactured from substandard components containing dangerous chemicals such as lead mercury, and did not meet safety standards. They do not carry? International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) codes and could not be tracked by network operators, they were widely used in terrorist activities??, Falcuo stated adding that Ghana alone losses about $20million annually from illegal importation of fake mobile phones as importers avoid payment of taxes and levies on the handsets.

This ugly development has also caused the Lebanese government to implement this year measures to render illegally imported phones unusable, as over 70 per cent of phone in country came in illegally. The crackdown will allow only phones IMEI codes registered at the Customs department to access the networks of state-owned telecom company. This same measure could be implemented in the country.

    Software, CD and accessories

Written programs, procedures or rules pertaining to the operation of a computer system that are stored in read/write memory are regarded as software. It is an intellectual property that requires huge investment to make, so faking is not only an economic crime, the usage of fake software also predisposes computers and IT networks to danger.

Faking in software is commonly known as piracy and the serious nature of the problem explains why governments all over the world set up agencies to checkmate it. Here in Nigeria, this function lies on the door step of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC).

Despite NCC efforts, pirated computer software, CDs, DVDs, music, movies, daunt the streets in the country. This has assumed alarming levels that right owners are now crying for help. The main attraction for users of pirated computer software and other products is also cheap pricing.

According to a recent study by Microsoft and the International Data Corporation (IDC), usage of pirated (fake) software portend great dangers to the users and businesses as a result of high exposure to infections by unexpected malware that can utterly destroy the computers.

The study reveals that consumers will spend 1.5 billion hours and $22 billion identifying, repairing and recovering from the impact of malware infections, while global enterprises will spend $114 billion to deal with the impact of a malware-induced cyber-attack resulting from the use of pirated software.

In the country, there are various versions of pirated software, computer discs (CDs), music and fake accessories such as mouse, memory cards, USB sticks, and the list goes on.

?Pirates are in every industry and this can constitute a clog in the wheel of the organization??, says Gozie Onumonu, head of Piracy Multichoice Nigeria, a pay TV service provider.

According to Onumonu, in 2004 Multichoice had over 5,000 subscribers on their platform in Onitsha, but as at now it is less than 500 subscribers, arguing that this shortfall can be attributed to the activities of pirates in the country.

He posited that there is a wrong perception about intellectual property (IP) crimes in the country where piracy is not seen as a hard crime and perpetrators are treated with levity.

This is not the case globally as the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) strives to see that intellectual property rights are observed and respected worldwide.

Experts are categorical in their opinion that respect for the rule of law contributes to a strong IP rights culture, which is essential in spurring innovation in local economies. An increase in legitimate technology businesses can add revenue that supports a country?s government programs and other infrastructure goals, creates jobs, increases profits for the broader industry, and helps create a strong business ecosystem.

    Electronics

At the Alaba International Market, it is business as usual as over 80 per cent of the products in the market are fake and substandard.

Charles Okonji, expresses concern about lax regulation and the inability of customers to get value for their money.

The impact of the war against fake and substandard products seems to have eluded the Alaba international market following the revelation that 80 per cent of the products on display are either fake or substandard and this has been so for years. Many Nigerians have had bitter experience in the hands of these dealers in the past and everyone is concerned about the present situation.

Though, the Director General of Standards Organisation of Nigeria, Joseph Odumodu had earlier said that SON was determined to further reduce the prevalence of substandard products from its current level to about 30 per cent in a short period hence? through the? e-products registration.

Going by the words of Odumodu, the e-product registration scheme was to cover products that are already in circulation in the market, including electric bulbs, stabilizers, tyres, electric fittings, generators, building materials, cable, television sets, computers, phones, IT equipment, lucks and keys, cement, paint, agro-allied products and toys, but the effect has not been felt despite the huge resources that have gone into the exercise as substandard products are still prevalent in the market.

In a recent research carried out by ManufacturingToday, it was discovered that every original electronic product in the market has its corresponding fake. This means that out of every 10 products in the market, two are fake.

The traders import these fake goods and place stickers, trademarks and labels of original products on the fake items. This act was to enable them sell the fake products at good price, though far cheaper than the rate at which the original of the same brand goes for. The common reason given for this act of faking was that the middle and low class consumers prefer those cheap products irrespective of the quality.

Major dealers of specific electronic products have explained that the unscrupulous act is being perpetrated by traders who are not accredited agents of manufacturers in the market that operate small shops. This is because they do not have name to protect and they are not representing any company, hence no warrantee is given on any of the products sold. But the accredited dealers of these products and manufacturers? representatives sell original products with warrantee.

Also, in an interaction with some of the small shop owners, it was revealed that the reason behind the act is that when they stock their shops with the original products that are more expensive, their money would be tied down for too long and may lose its value. So they keep stocking both the original and fake products with the intention of explaining to the consumers, the value of what they intend to buy. Moreover, this means that the choice of what quality of product to buy is left with the consumer.

One of the dealers confirmed that all fake products were imported from China. That means that SONCAP has not been implemented; though SONCAP was a policy introduced for these products to be tested at the point of import to check the substandard products.

    Consequences of adulterated fuel

Adulteration of transport fuel, which is currently a very flourishing business in our country, can lead to economic losses, increased emissions and deterioration of performance and parts of engines using the adulterated fuels. Some of the effects of adulteration are outlined below:

    1. Mal-functioning of the engine, failure of components, and safety problems. The problem gets further magnified for high performance modern engines.

    2. Increased tailpipe emissions of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), particulate matter (PM) and can also cause increased emissions of air toxin substances.

    3. Adulteration of fuel can cause health problems directly in the form of increased tailpipe emissions of harmful and sometimes carcinogenic pollutants.

    Possible solution

One significant step that would curb the activities of fakers and importers of substandard products is to take the campaigns seriously. One is looking up to the day as promised by the DG when the markets would be rid of substandard products.

Second is the issue of legislation which apparently is a cog in the wheel for SON. According to the DG, ?right now we have sent our bill to the National Assembly and hopefully within the next two to three months, if we get it out, I want to celebrate the first person I will send to jail, I will celebrate that person because the business of selling sub-standard products is not one that anybody should be proud about and I believe that it is thriving on the one part because the government has been a bit lukewarm on the enforcement but more importantly because we do not send people to jail. If you send one or two people to jail, I can tell you that a lot of people will stay out of that sort of business and that is exactly what I hope we would be able to do before this year runs out?.

Again, the regulatory agencies like NADAC and SON must be adequately funded to enable them execute their plans for the year. Finally, staff of these organisations must be properly empowered through rigorous training programmes for improved capacity to enable them build capacity for effective monitoring and testing of products.
