Kenya charges Shebab-linked preacher after riots

A radical Kenyan preacher accused by the US of supporting Somalia's Al-Qaeda linked militants was Monday charged with inciting violent protests, after he surrendered claiming he feared for his life.

Abubaker Shariff Ahmed handed himself over to a court in the port city of Mombasa after the assassination there last week of fellow Islamist cleric Aboud Rogo Mohammed by unknown gunmen, which sparked days of deadly rioting.

Ahmed, also known as Makaburi, pled not guilty to charges of encouraging that violence, which saw two days of running battles, with grenades hurled at two police trucks, killing three officers and wounding over a dozen others.

Like Ahmed, the murdered cleric -- popularly known as Rogo -- was also on United States sanctions lists for allegedly supporting neighbouring Somalia's extremist Shebab, including by recruiting and fundraising for the group.

Following Rogo's murder, Ahmed is alleged to have called out from a mosque to supporters to target security officers and to torch churches in Mombasa, Kenya's main port and a key tourist town. He denies the charges.

Rogo's supporters accused the security forces of murdering him, calling his death an "extra-judicial killing". The police reject the claim and have appealed for help in hunting down those responsible.

But Ahmed, speaking to Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper on Monday just before he handed himself in to the authorities, said he feared for his life.

"We are certain that there is a hit squad targeting Muslim clerics and other Muslims perceived to be extremists," he told the newspaper.

"They have accused us of terror but have refused to provide any evidence. Instead, they are now sending people to kill us," he added.

Ahmed, speaking through his lawyer Mbugua Mureithi, denied prosecution claims in court that he had been running from the police.

"My client was not hiding as no police came for him... there was no attempt by police to arrest my client," Mureithi told the court.

He was remanded in custody until September 5, when a bail hearing will be held.

ICE chief of staff resigns amid misconduct claims

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A senior Obama administration political appointee and longtime aide to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano resigned Saturday amid allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior lodged by at least three Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees.

Suzanne Barr, chief of staff to ICE Director John Morton, said in her resignation letter that the allegations against her are "unfounded." But she said she was stepping down anyway to end distractions within the agency. ICE, a division of the Homeland Security Department, confirmed Barr had resigned. The Associated Press obtained a copy of Barr's letter.

Barr is accused of sexually inappropriate behavior toward employees. The complaints are related to a sexual discrimination and retaliation lawsuit filed by a senior ICE agent in May.

In her letter to Morton, Barr said she has been the subject of "unfounded allegations designed to destroy my reputation" and is resigning "with great regret."

"Of greater concern however, is the threat these allegations represent to the reputation of this agency and the men and women who proudly serve their country by advancing ICE's mission," Barr wrote. "As such, I feel it is incumbent upon me to take every step necessary to prevent further harm to the agency and to prevent this from further distracting from our critical work."

Barr went on leave last month after the New York Post reported on the lawsuit filed by James T. Hayes Jr., ICE's special agent in charge in New York. Additional employees came forward with their allegations around the same time.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King, R-N.Y., said in a statement Saturday that Barr's resignation "raises the most serious questions about management practices and personnel policies at the Department of Homeland Security." He said his committee will continue to review the case and personnel practices at DHS.

In one complaint, Barr is accused of telling a male subordinate he was "sexy" and asking a personal question about his anatomy during an office party. In a separate complaint, she is accused of offering to perform a sex act with a male subordinate during a business trip in Bogota, Colombia. She's also accused of calling a male subordinate from her hotel room and offering to perform a sex act. The names of two of Barr's accusers were censored in affidavits reviewed by AP.

Homeland Security's office of professional responsibility and inspector general have been investigating the allegations.

Prior to the lawsuit, there were no complaints about Barr, according to a homeland security official who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

In the lawsuit, Hayes described a "frat house" atmosphere at ICE designed to humiliate male employees under Barr's leadership. Hayes, who was transferred to New York from ICE headquarters in Washington, is asking for more than $4 million that, among other things, would cover compensation he believes he is owed for relocation expenses and financial losses associated with his transfer.

Hayes' lawyer, Morris Fischer of Silver Spring, Md., has declined to comment.

The Justice Department is seeking to dismiss Hayes' lawsuit on the basis that he did not state a claim for retaliation.

Barr, a 1995 graduate of the University of Arizona, was among Napolitano's first appointments after she became secretary in 2009. Barr started working for Napolitano in 2004, while Napolitano was governor of Arizona. Prior to that, Barr worked for Arizona Republican Sens. Jon Kyl and John McCain.

Study explores why children with asthma are more likely to be bullied

Vienna, Austria: New research has uncovered several factors which could explain why children with asthma are at an increased risk of being bullied.

The study, presented today (2 September 2012) at the European Respiratory Society's Annual Congress in Vienna, highlights the need for doctors to talk to children with asthma about bullying, as well as the impact the disease could be having in other areas of their life.

Bullying or teasing of children with any chronic medical condition is common, yet it is not always clear what factors contribute to this. Researchers from the Derbyshire Children's Hospital, in the UK, used data from the large six-country "Room to Breathe" survey of childhood asthma, to look at the factors associated with an increased risk of bullying.

Parents and children aged 7 years and above were interviewed as part of the study. Data was collected from 943 questionnaires which asked questions about conditions at home, lifestyle of parents and children and their overall experience of their condition.

The results revealed a number of factors associated with an increased risk of bullying. Factors such as a reduced participation with sport and feelings of sadness were significantly associated with an increased risk of bullying. Additionally, factors that could be improved, such as poor asthma control, parental smoking and parents' on-going worries about their child's health, were also associated with bullying.

Dr Will Carroll, from the Derbyshire Children's Hospital, said: "Our findings emphasise the need for doctors and nurses to speak to their patients about the effects their condition has on all aspects of their life. We know that bullying is associated with asthma and these findings can help us understand why this is case.

"A number of the factors identified are things that can be changed, such as participation in sport, asthma control and parental worry over their child's health. As doctors, we must work with families to ensure these risk factors are removed and work with schools and teachers to ensure children with asthma are able to participate in sports at a level that is safe for them."

David Supple, the parent of an asthma sufferer, said: ""When you have a child with exercise-induced asthma it can be really hard to get them to participate. You can be scared to push them - but the health and social benefits far outweigh the fear, and can help build a lifetime of confidence against bullying. We have made a real effort to include our son, Alex in as much sport as we can to ensure that he isn't excluded from different groups and to keep a wide balance of friends."

Exclusive: Walmart tests iPhone item scanning at Arkansas store

Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:45pm EDT

(Reuters) - Walmart Stores Inc is testing a "Scan & Go" system that would allow shoppers to scan items using their iPhones and then quickly pay at a self-checkout counter.

Earlier this week, Walmart invited employees with Apple Inc iPhones to participate in a test at a Walmart supercenter in Rogers, Arkansas, near the company's headquarters, according to a form on the Survey Monkey website (here).

While self-checkout aisles are common at many stores, the ability to scan items with one's mobile phone while shopping is not a typical process. Supervalu Inc's Jewel-Osco chain once let shoppers use hand-held scanners and then enter that information at the checkout to pay, but that test ended years ago.

A push to get other participants, including Walmart employees' friends and family, appeared to have also been emailed this week by someone from the company's @WalmartLabs team, but could not be verified on Friday afternoon.

"We're continually testing new and innovative ways to serve customers and enhance the shopping experience in our stores," said Walmart spokesman David Tovar.

Musical medicine as cancer scare sparks aerobics career

Musical medicine as cancer scare sparks aerobics career

BRAVE Sally Cunnane found more than just fitness after double kidney failure and a cancer scare inspired her to become an aerobics instructor.

She almost lost her life more than 10 years ago, but found unlikely love with the Oxford Don who guided her through her studies.

The 42-year-old married Tom Cunnane, 57, in March after a romance which formed after a decade of friendship and education as she rebuilt her life.

She said: ?After this bout of illness I wanted to get back to fitness and earn a bit of extra money.

?I was already a member of the Oxford Hotel gym and my parents funded the course for me.

?I?ve been teaching for 10 years now and I?ve had a fantastic time and got to know a lot of people locally.?

Mrs Cunnane first started feeling unwell at the age of 25 having returned from several years living abroad after she graduated from Oxford Brookes.

She was experiencing vomiting, high temperatures and severe weight loss, eventually dropping to less than six stone.

Mrs Cunnane made repeated visits to her GP, who suspected anorexia, but after she collapsed at home on October 26, 1996, doctors found that both kidneys had failed and she underwent major surgery.

She had stents installed and had ?stone-smashing? treatment to get rid of kidney stones, but that wasn?t the end of her suffering as she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma when she was 30-years-old. She said: ?It was a horrible experience, and the main thing I want to point out is that young people should be aware it can happen.?

After her successful cancer treatment, Mrs Cunnane was invited to Hertford College by friends where she met her husband-to-be, who coached her through the science side of a qualification in ?exercise to music?.

With his help, she passed the written test with 97 per cent, a result he is particularly proud of.

Mr Cunnane said: ?No student I know ever got 97 per cent in any exam, and certainly not my highly intelligent undergraduates.?

During their time together, a friendship developed and eventually love blossomed.

Mrs Cunnane said: ?We were just friends at that stage, and he offered his assistance, and I couldn?t refuse.

?I had always admired Tom, and I started to notice that when he wasn?t there I missed him. At the time he was still in a broken marriage, and I thought he was unavailable because I didn?t realise about his marriage.?

Mrs Cunnane now teaches zumba and other music-based exercises at city council-owned leisure centres across Oxford and runs some private sessions.
