Local Business Reviews Read By 85% of Consumers [Survey ...

BrightLocal has revealed insights from their new?consumer review survey looking at local search. Not surprisingly, the usage of local search has increased over the past couple of years, as well as the types of businesses that people are searching for. What is surprising is how people are using local search, and it might not be what you would automatically think of.

Despite a large increase of numbers of users who are using the Internet to find local businesses when comparing numbers from 2011 to 2012, the startling fact is how small the actual usage of the Internet on a weekly or daily basis is. In fact over 30 percent of respondents stated that they have only used the Internet between two and five times in the previous 12 months to find a local business.

Even when compared to the 15 percent who use the Internet on a weekly basis to find local business and the 7 percent who use it on a daily basis, it is still pretty surprising about the lack of Internet adoption by those trying to find local businesses in a day and age when many local businesses are dropping Yellow Pages and newspaper advertisements.

What are people using local search for?

Restaurants and caf?s are far in the lead, with nearly 70 percent of respondents stating that they have used the Internet to find a restaurant or caf? in the last 12 months. General shops, hotels/B&B/Guest Houses, clothing shops, and doctors/dentist were all in the top five.

Consumers seem to be taking online customer reviews into consideration when searching for local businesses, with 85 percent of consumers saying they do read online reviews for local businesses and more than 60 percent reading reviews for restaurants and caf?s.

What is good news for local businesses is the fact that not many people are just reading the first review for a local business. More than 60 percent read between two and six online reviews before they form an opinion on the business.

But despite the prevalence of local business marketing, people are far more likely to recommend a business through word-of-mouth rather than online. But what is interesting is it has declined over the last year, with about 75 percent recommending a local business through word-of-mouth in 2012 and down to about 72 percent in 2013.

Of the online recommendations, Facebook was the clear winner. Slightly more than 35 percent recommended a local business on Facebook, which is an increase from 31 percent in 2012. Google+ and Twitter are both slightly under 15 percent with Twitter gaining much more ground over the past year.

Texas woman set to be 500th execution in state

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) ? Texas, the nation's busiest death penalty state, is set to mark a solemn moment in criminal justice Wednesday with the execution of convicted killer Kimberly McCarthy.

If McCarthy is put to death in Huntsville as planned, she would become the 500th person executed in Texas since the state resumed carrying out the death penalty in 1982. The 52-year-old also would be the first woman executed in the U.S. since 2010.

McCarthy's attorney, Maurie Levin, said she has exhausted all efforts to block the execution, after denials by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.

"If there was something to appeal, I would," said Levin.

Texas has carried out nearly 40 percent of the more than 1,300 executions in U.S. since the Supreme Court allowed capital punishment to resume in 1976. The state's standing stems from its size as the nation's second most populous state as well as its tradition of tough justice for killers.

With increased debate in recent years over wrongful convictions, some states have halted the practice entirely. However, 32 states have the death penalty on the books. Still, it's clear the debate over capital punishment has touched Texas, with lawmakers providing more sentencing options for juries and courts narrowing the cases for which death can be sought.

McCarthy faces execution for the 1997 robbery, beating and fatal stabbing of retired college psychology professor Dorothy Booth. Booth had agreed to give McCarthy a cup of sugar before she was attacked with a butcher knife at her home in Lancaster, about 15 miles south of Dallas. Authorities say McCarthy cut off Booth's finger to remove her wedding ring.

Police also had linked two other slayings to McCarthy, a former nursing home therapist who became addicted to crack cocaine.

In her appeals, McCarthy contended prosecutors improperly excluded black jurors and that her lawyers failed to challenge the moves at trial or in early appeals. McCarthy is black, and Booth was white. All but one of the 12 jurors at McCarthy's trial were white.

In January, McCarthy had been moved to a small holding cell a few steps from the Texas death chamber when a Dallas judge moved her execution to April. That timing then was reset for June when Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins said he wanted to await the outcome of capital punishment-related bills before lawmakers in Austin.

On Tuesday, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals declined to reconsider its denial a day earlier of McCarthy's appeal, saying her claims should have been raised previously.

Levin, a University of Texas law professor, said because the court's ruling focused on a procedural and not a substantive issue, the case cannot be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"The shameful errors that plague Ms. McCarthy's case ? race bias, ineffective counsel and courts unwilling to exercise meaningful oversight of the system ? reflect problems that are central to the administration of the death penalty as a whole. For this to be the emblem of Texas' 500th execution is something all Texans should be ashamed of," Levin said.

McCarthy declined to speak with reporters as her execution date neared.

Anti-death penalty groups planned to protest outside the Walls Unit in Huntsville, where McCarthy is set to receive a lethal injection Wednesday evening.

"The whole world is looking at Texas," said Gloria Rubac, with the Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement in Houston.

McCarthy would be the 13th woman nationwide and the fourth in Texas put to death since 1976. In the same period, more than 1,300 men have been executed nationwide, 496 of them in Texas. Virginia is a distant second, nearly 400 executions behind.

Federal statistics show that over the past three decades women account for about 10 percent of convicted murderers. According to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, there were 63 women on death row in the U.S. as of Jan. 1, representing 2 percent of the nation's 3,125 condemned prisoners.

Prosecutors showed that McCarthy stole Booth's Mercedes and drove to Dallas, pawned the wedding ring she had removed from the woman's severed finger for $200 and then went to a crack house to buy cocaine. Evidence also showed she used Booth's credit cards at a liquor store.

Booth's DNA was found on a 10-inch butcher knife recovered from McCarthy's home.

McCarthy blamed the crime on two drug dealers, but there was no evidence either existed.

Blood DNA evidence also tied McCarthy to the December 1988 slayings of 81-year-old Maggie Harding and 85-year-old Jettie Lucas. Harding was stabbed and beaten with a meat tenderizer, while Lucas was beaten with both sides of a claw hammer and stabbed.

McCarthy, who denied any involvement in the attacks, was indicted but not tried for those slayings.

McCarthy is a former wife of Aaron Michaels, founder of the New Black Panther Party, and he testified on her behalf. They had separated before Booth's slaying.

Shares, dollar gain after GDP data eases Fed fears

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The dollar rose and global equity markets gained for a second day on Wednesday after a surprisingly sharp downward revision to first-quarter U.S. economic growth eased concerns the Federal Reserve might soon begin to withdraw stimulus.

In addition, moves by China to calm bank fears and supportive signs from the European Central Bank on the need for continued stimulus helped extend Tuesday's rebound after the global sell-off of stocks, commodities and bonds last week.

U.S. gross domestic product grew at only a 1.8 percent annual rate in the first quarter, the Commerce Department said in its final estimate, down from the prior estimate of a 2.4 percent pace.

The benchmark S&P 500 stock index was on track for its biggest two-day gain in three weeks, cutting the decline since its all-time closing high a month ago to 3.95 percent.

"Despite all the rhetoric and fear about tapering, this will keep the Fed firmly planted in stimulus, which is a positive for the market," said Michael Mullaney, chief investment officer at Fiduciary Trust Co in Boston, which oversees about $9.5 billion.

"This is another example of bad news being good news."

European stocks gained close to 2 percent to post their biggest two-day gain since April after ECB president Mario Draghi said an accommodative monetary policy was still appropriate. The bank's policy "will stay accommodative for the foreseeable future," he said.

MSCI's all-country world equity index <.miwd00000pus> rose 0.96 percent, while the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of leading regional companies gained 1.71 percent to close at 1,149.71 points. The EuroSTOXX 50 index <.stoxx50e> rose 2.34 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> closed up 149.83 points, or 1.02 percent, at 14,910.14. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> rose 15.23 points, or 0.96 percent, at 1,603.26. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> gained 28.34 points, or 0.85 percent, at 3,376.22.

The S&P 500's advance followed a gain of nearly 1 percent on Tuesday, spurred after U.S. data on durable goods orders, sales of new homes and consumer confidence all topped expectations.

A pledge by China's central bank, the People's Bank of China, to act as a lender of last resort was the story of the day on Wednesday, said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at The Davidson Cos in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

"The global fears regarding the possibility of a Chinese credit situation spilling over and becoming very serious has eased off some," he said. The People's Bank "is going to come in and make sure the Chinese banking system doesn't collapse."

Gold hit its lowest in almost three years and was on course for a record quarterly loss. Prices could slide to levels below $1,000 per ounce, investors and analysts said. Silver dropped 5 percent and platinum group metals also declined sharply.

Spot gold prices fell $53.03 to $1,223.70 an ounce. U.S. gold futures for August delivery settled down $45.30 at $1,229.80.

Bond markets in Europe and benchmark U.S. Treasuries continued to claw back ground, although investors remained worried the rebound could give way with markets likely to need more time to acclimatize to the new environment.

U.S. Treasuries gained after a recent slump took yields to near two-year highs, with the weaker-than-expected GDP pointing to continued potential for fragility in the world's biggest economy.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 17/32 in price to yield 2.5465 percent.

Euro zone bonds rose across the board on the ECB's pledge to keep exceptional monetary policy measures for the foreseeable future.

German Bund futures came off 8-month lows on Monday of 139.90 to settle up 49 ticks at 141.03.

If economic data is weak, "the punch bowl stays where it is. Good news, economically, the punch bowl gets moved a little bit further away," said Wilmer Stith, co-manager of the Wilmington Broad Market Bond Fund in Baltimore.

Oil prices traded near break-even after data showed an unexpected rise in U.S. crude stocks, which combined with the GDP report, stoked concerns about the outlook for demand in the world's top consumer.

Brent crude for August delivery rose 40 cents to settle at $101.66 a barrel. U.S. crude settled up 18 cents at $95.50 a barrel.

The euro was down 0.60 percent at $1.3005, stung by Draghi's comments on an accommodative monetary policy and the risks to growth in the euro zone.

"Juxtaposed against shifting Fed policy, (Draghi's comment) highlights that relative central bank policy will soon shift from supporting to weighing on the euro," said Camilla Sutton, chief FX strategist at Scotiabank.

The dollar rose to a three-week high of 83.003 against a basket of currencies <.dxy>, buoyed mainly by solid gains against the euro. It later was up 0.48 percent at 82.958.

Snowden whereabouts unknown as Russia defies U.S. pressure

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden's whereabouts were a mystery on Monday as Russia defied White House pressure to send him back to the United States and stop him fleeing Moscow on his globe-crossing escape from U.S. prosecution.

Snowden, whose exposure of secret U.S. government surveillance raised questions about intrusions into private lives, was allowed to leave Hong Kong on Sunday after Washington had asked the Chinese territory to arrest him on espionage charges.

The 30-year-old flew to Moscow as a transit stop before heading elsewhere, several sources said. But reports that he would fly to Cuba were put in doubt when witnesses could not see him on the plane, despite heightened security before take-off.

Ecuador, which has sheltered the founder of the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy group, Julian Assange, said it was considering Snowden's request for asylum and that human rights were it main concern. There are no direct commercial flights to Quito from Moscow.

"He didn't take the flight (to Havana)," a source at Russia's national airline Aeroflot told Reuters.

As speculation grew about where he would go next - Ecuador, Venezuela or Cuba at a later date to escape the crowd of journalists aboard Monday's flight to Havana - Washington was stung by Russian defiance.

Snowden's flight to Russia, which like China challenges U.S. dominance of global diplomacy, is an embarrassment to President Barack Obama who has tried to "reset" ties with Moscow and build a partnership with Beijing.

The White House said it expected the Russian government to send Snowden back to the United States and lodged "strong objections" to Hong Kong and China for letting him go.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said during a visit to India that it would be "deeply troubling" if Moscow defied the United States over Snowden, and said the fugitive "places himself above the law, having betrayed his country".

But the Russian government ignored the appeal and President Vladimir Putin's press secretary denied any knowledge of Snowden's movements.

Asked if Snowden had spoken to the Russian authorities, Peskov said: "Overall, we have no information about him."

He declined comment on the expulsion request but other Russian officials said Moscow had no obligation to cooperate with Washington, after it passed legislation to impose visa bans and asset freezes on Russians accused of violating human rights.

U.S. HYPOCRISY

"Why should the United States expect restraint and understanding from Russia?" said Alexei Pushkov, the head of the foreign affairs committee in the lower house of parliament.

Putin has missed few chances to champion public figures who challenge Western governments and to portray Washington as an overzealous global policeman. But Russian leaders have not paraded Snowden before cameras or trumpeted his arrival.

Since leaving Hong Kong, where he feared arrest and extradition, Snowden has been searching for a country that can guarantee his security.

Ecuador's foreign minister, Ricardo Patino, said during a trip to Vietnam that Quito would take into account a U.S. request about Snowden and is in "respectful" contact with Russia about him. He gave no details of the U.S. request.

"We will consider the position of the U.S. government and we will take a decision in due course in line with the (Ecuadorean) constitution, the laws, international politics and sovereignty," Patino told a news conference in Hanoi.

A source at Aeroflot said on Sunday Snowden was booked on the flight due to depart for Havana on Monday at 2:05 p.m. (1005 GMT). But a correspondent aboard could not see him and the seat he was supposed to occupy, 17A, was taken by another passenger.

It was not immediately clear whether the plane had a crew section where Snowden might have been concealed.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer said Putin had probably known about and approved Snowden's flight to Russia, and saw "the hand of Beijing" in Hong Kong's decision to let Snowden leave.

But taking the higher ground after being accused of hacking computers abroad, the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed "grave concern" over Snowden's allegations that the United States had hacked computers in China. It said it had taken up the issue with Washington.

Some Russians have praised Snowden's revelations. Others fear a new chill in relations with the United States.

"We are a pretty stubborn country and so is the United States. Both are mighty countries, so I would say this has a good potential to turn into a big fuss in bilateral relations," said Ina Sosna, manager of a Moscow cleaning company.

"I guess it would be best if they just let him move on from Russia to avoid any more controversy over him being here."

Snowden was assisted in his escape from Hong Kong by WikiLeaks, whose founder Assange said he had helped to arrange documents from Ecuador. WikiLeaks said diplomats and Sarah Harrison, a legal researcher working for the anti-secrecy group, accompanied him.

Ecuador, like Cuba and Venezuela, is a member of the ALBA bloc, an alliance of leftist governments in Latin America that pride themselves on their "anti-imperialist" credentials. The Quito government has been sheltering Assange at its London embassy for the past year.

Snowden, who had worked at a U.S. National Security Agency facility in Hawaii, had been hiding in Hong Kong, a former British colony that returned to China in 1997, since leaking details about secret U.S. surveillance programs to news media.

He has been charged with theft of federal government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence to an unauthorized person, with the latter two charges falling under the U.S. Espionage Act.
