Mayor Rob Ford wasn?t surprised Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke got turfed.
?This is a hockey town and you?ve got to produce quick and if you don?t, unfortunately, you don?t have a job,? Ford said at City Hall on Wednesday.
?It was just a matter of time. With a shortened season people are getting antsy.?
The avid Leafs fan said ?it?s not so much? Burke?s fault the team hasn?t made the playoffs.
?The guys got to start playing,? insisted Ford, who added the Leafs need to ?start moving things around.
?I think (Roberto Luongo) played a big factor,? Ford said. ?People were itching to get Luongo in here and he just sat back and watched things happen. You?ve got to make things happen in this city ? especially when you?re dealing with our hockey team.?
Ford described Burke as a ?gentleman? and a ?good man.
?He?ll be successful wherever he ends up,? he said. ?He?s a good hockey guy.?
Ford could be out of a job any day now if he loses an appeal of the judicial decision throwing him out of office for violating the municipal conflict of interest act.
Asked earlier in the day how he?s dealing with waiting to find out his political fate, Ford shrugged.
?I?d rather just, you know, keep doing my job ? We?ll see what happens,? Ford said following a Pan Am Games funding announcement in Etobicoke. ?It is out of my hands. I don?t want to get into it. We?ll cross that bridge when we get to it.?
