More Cultural Events to Celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year in New York City

China Institute Lion Dance
Where:
China Institute, 125 East 65th Street, 212-744-8181
When: Sunday, February 5, 2012 11 a.m. - noon
Cost: FREE!
Greet the Year of the Dragon with a Lion Dance. This folk tradition is performed by acrobats and martial artists dressed in colorful costumes and accompanied by drums and gongs. This event is very popular and only early arrival can guarantee a good view of the performance. The Lion Dance is held on East 65th Street outside China Institute so prepare for cold weather.

China Institute Lunar New Year Programs For Families!
Where: China Institute, 125 East 65th Street, 212-744-8181

Cost: $40-70 member/$50-80 non-member for one child and one adult
The China Institute will hold dumpling making and calligraphy/couplet making workshops to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Preparing for the New Year: Walking Tour
January 14/15, 21/22 & 28, 2012; 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m./1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Where: Begins @ MoCA, Museum lobby at 215 Centre Street (between Grand and Howard Sts)
Fee: $18-20/person ($8 for museum members); advance registration required. Space is limited.
Lunar New Year is the liveliest and most important celebration in Chinese culture and Chinatown is the place to experience it. MoCA's walking tour takes guests through New York Chinatown to learn about holiday traditions and customs; discover the area's history; and sample a few New Year's treats. Tours are conducted in English and are led by MoCA docents with personal or family roots in the neighborhood. In case of inclement weather, tours will be held in the galleries. Lunar New Year 2012: Family Drop-in Arts & Crafts
Mondays, January 2, 9, 16 & 23, 2012; 2-4 p.m.
Where: MoCA - 215 Centre Street
Fee: free with museum admission.
On Monday afternoons throughout January, visitors to the Museum of Chinese in the Americas can create their own Zodiac Animal Puppets. Ages 6 and up.

China New Year Benefit
Where: Cipriani 42nd Street
When: Friday, January 27, 2012 ~ 6:30 p.m.
Cost: $4,500 for a reserved table of twelve/$400 individual ticket
The Annual China Institute benefit includes a cocktail reception and a banquet style dinner, an awards ceremony, traditional entertainment, the Red Envelope collection and dancing.
