Aaliyah Posthumous Album Cover Art Revealed on Twitter

Since the announcement that a posthumous Aaliyah album was in the works, the project has been mired in controversy. Recently, the late songbird?s label, Blackground Records, went on Twitter and posted the cover art of the album, which has everyone in a tizzy.

The artwork features what appears to be Aaliyah floating in the ocean with her face superimposed in the symbol of the letter ?A.? It?s a haunting cover to say the least considering that Aaliyah died in an airplane crash near the shores of the Bahamas. But maybe we are reading too much into the artwork.

Barry Hankerson, Aaliyah?s uncle and CEO of Blackground Records, posted the cover art and a confirmation that the album is forthcoming. ?Aaliyah 16 unreleased tracks 2013 stay tuned ? Enough said ? #TeamAaliyah,? he tweeted.

As you may already know, Drake, who is an obsessive Aaliyah fan, and Grammy-winning producer Noah ?40? Shebib are overseeing the project, which is due out in 2013. Hopefully, the album will arrive in stores on or around Jan. 16, which would have been Aaliyah?s 34th birthday.

The downside to the album is that Aaliyah?s closest friends Timbaland and Missy Elliott are not participating in the project. ?Although Missy and Timbaland always strive to keep the memory of their close friend alive, we have not been contacted about the project nor are there any plans at this time to participate,? said their manager Mono Scott-Young. ?We?ve seen the reports surfacing that they have been confirmed to participate but that is not the case.?

Meanwhile, it looks as if Mr. Hankerson is catching some criticism for the cover art on his timeline. He wrote, ?Twitter provides a block feature and I shall utilize it. Peace and positivity is the key to life.? He then added, ?Be #Positive the music is coming.?

Governors State University Family Development Center Receives ...

University Park, IL-(ENEWSPF)- The Family Development Center (FDC) at Governors State University has been nationally recognized for meeting the highest standards of early childhood education.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the nation?s leading professional organization working on behalf of young children, has awarded accreditation to the FDC, located on the Governors State campus in University Park. The FDC has programs for children birth to three years of age, all-day and half-day pre-kindergarten, after school and evening child care, and parent education programs.

FDC Executive Director Carol Morrison said the accreditation came following two years of preparation and fine-tuning of training, policies, and procedures at the center. Early childhood teachers spent a full year documenting every aspect of their teaching practices and curriculum, she said. The FDC surveyed parents, and the center?s handbook was rewritten.

The Family Development Center was assessed by a NAEYC representative during a two-day visit in May. The FDC received near-perfect scores in 10 criterion standards considered vital by NAEYC ? relationships, curriculum, teaching, assessment, health, teachers, families, community relationships, physical environment, and leadership and management.

?We are honored to receive NAEYC?s accreditation,? Morrison said. ?For us, this is an affirmation that we provide an excellent early childhood program. We work to assure that children of all ages in our program are receiving the best education they can, and will be lifelong learners.?

In the 25 years since NAEYC accreditation was established, it has become a widely-recognized sign of high quality early childhood education. More than 7,000 programs are currently accredited by NAEYC, approximately eight percent of all preschools and other early childhood programs.

GSU President Elaine P. Maimon praised the FDC?s staff and administration on the accreditation.

?GSU?s Family Development Center is evidence that GSU is committed to quality education, from infancy to longevity,? Dr. Maimon said. ?Accreditation from NAEYC, a special achievement for early childhood facilities, emphasizes the exceptional quality of our center. We are proud of the education we provide to young children and also to their parents through ?The Parent Connection.? The Family Development Center is one way that GSU serves as a true public square.?

Dr. Deborah Bordelon, Dean of GSU?s College of Education, said the accreditation has added benefits for students in the university?s Early Childhood Education degree program, which is already accredited by NAEYC. Students often perform field work at the FDC, she said, and they will now receive valuable training at a facility that meets NAEYC?s rigorous standards in early childhood education.

?At Governors State, we are strongly committed to providing high quality early childhood education through our programs at the Family Development Center,? Dr. Bordelon said. ?Our initial teacher preparation programs in Early Childhood Education are also nationally recognized by NAEYC and our pre-service teachers are able to obtain valuable field experience at the FDC. Achieving the NAEYC accreditation provides affirmation of the quality work that our Family Development Center and College of Education faculty, students, staff, as well as our community partners, are engaged in on a daily basis.?

Dr. Bordelon thanked Morrison for her leadership at FDC. ?Her vision and leadership were instrumental in making the NAEYC accreditation visit a resounding success,? she said.

The NAEYC accreditation is in effect through September, 2017. During that time, the FDC is required to file an annual report with the accrediting agency and comply with NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards.

?When you?re in a hurry, it can be easy to grab the same foods you always have, even if they aren?t healthy,? says MaryBeth Robinson, registered dietician and diabetes educator with the Texas A&M Health Science Center Coastal Bend Health Education Center Diabetes Education Program. ?In reality, eating fast food doesn?t have to hurt your efforts to manage your weight or manage your diabetes. You just must make the right choices.?

When you?re relying on a fast-food restaurant to satisfy a hunger pang, keep in mind portion size. Ordering a small or child?s size meal can cut the amount of carbohydrates ingested and still satisfy hunger.

More often, fast-food restaurants also offer fruit or salad side dishes instead of french fries, which can give you a needed nutrient boost and cut down on fat and carbohydrates.

Robinson also advises to watch out for seemingly healthy salads offered at fast-food chains, which sometimes can total up to more than 1,000 calories ? equal to two hamburgers with cheese.

?By the time you add up the salad dressing, the bacon, the nuts and the breaded chicken, it?s extremely high in calories,? she says.

Instead, skip the salad dressing, bring your own low-calorie version and watch out for salad add-ons that aren?t fruit or vegetables.

And, although Robinson shies away from telling anyone they must eliminate any particular food from their diet forever, her one exception is sugary sodas.

?Don?t drink your calories,? she says. ?Choose diet soda or water, and save your calories for foods that give you nutrients, too.?

Akin Senate bid tests GOP strength in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? A "bellwether," quite literally, is a male sheep wearing a bell that leads the flock ? or at least allows a farmer to find his sheep, because the clanging ram is never too far from the rest of the group.

For most of a century, Missouri has been the nation's bellwether. Every four years, a majority of voters in the state in the center of the country ? a near perfect mirror of its demographics, geography, economics and politics ? predictably cast their ballots for the candidates the nation as a whole chooses to win the White House.

That changed in 2008, when Missouri voters went for Republican John McCain by a razor thin margin over Democrat Barack Obama. It was just the second time in a century that Missouri didn't side with the winning presidential candidate.

Should Republican Rep. Todd Akin ? who offended millions of Americans with insensitive remarks about rape and pregnancy ? rebound this November to defeat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, Missouri will probably need to turn in its bell for good.

Obama has more or less conceded the state to presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Should Akin manage to beat McCaskill without the support of Romney or other top Republicans, including all five living current or former GOP senators from the state, voters will solidify that an already red-leaning Missouri has truly become a rock-ribbed Republican stronghold.

"There is too much at stake here in this election," Akin implored in an online fundraising plea sent heading into the weekend. "Today, let's show Claire once and for all that Missouri is going Republican Red this November."

To be sure, Missouri has been trending Republican for several years. The state Legislature, which swung to the GOP a decade ago, now has one of its largest Republican majorities in state history. And in 2010, Missourians ousted Democratic Rep. Ike Skelton from a seat he held for 34 years in favor of a Republican who had been the spokeswoman for a successful ballot campaign to engrave a gay-marriage ban in the state constitution.

Obama has made no campaign appearances and run no TV ads in the state. Yet political scientists have been reluctant to lump Missouri in the same reliably Republican category as neighboring Kansas or many of its new peers in the Southeastern Conference, where the University of Missouri now plays its sports.

"It's pretty obvious that it's trended a little bit red," said Dave Robertson, a political science professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. "An Akin victory in November would be a very, very strong indicator that this state is comfortably red."

Missouri has a long history of divided loyalties ? its residents fought for both the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War. That division has historically made Missouri a microcosm of the nation.

Geographically, Missouri has large cities on its east and west "coasts," with a rapidly growing population in the south and a largely rural, agricultural base in the center ? just like U.S.

Demographically, the racial composition of Missouri's residents, their average age, marital status and educational background all have historically been fairly close to national norms. And although the median household income has slightly trailed the nation, so has Missouri's cost of living ? making its poverty rate on par with that of the rest of the country.

That has begun to change. Most notably, the 2010 census revealed that Missouri's racial mix no longer is roughly the same as the national average. More of its residents are white (83 percent compared with 72 percent nationally) and significantly fewer Missourians are Hispanic (3.5 percent compared with more than 16 percent nationally). A far greater percentage of Missouri households speak English only than do nationally, which perhaps explains why state voters adopted a 2008 constitutional amendment making English the official language for government proceedings by an overwhelming 86 percent.

Democrats still can win statewide elections in Missouri, but they typically do so by positioning themselves in the political center. Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon, for example, has campaigned on a Republican-like theme highlighting his tax cuts and spending cuts while running commercials that describe him as "independent."

McCaskill cast herself as a moderate and portrayed Akin as an extremist even before Akin's gaffe a week ago in which he told a St. Louis TV interviewer that women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rate." Akin has since apologized and said he was wrong.

A poll released Saturday by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and TV station KMOV showed McCaskill with 50 percent support, compared with 41 percent for Akin. The telephone poll of 625 registered Missouri voters who said they were likely to vote in the November election was conducted Wednesday and Thursday. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Republican Judy Loman, 68, of the rural central Missouri town of Versailles, said she believes Akin's apology is sincere although she acknowledged "mixed feelings" about whether to vote for him in November. Regardless, Loman said, she would not vote for McCaskill.

In the primary, Carolyn Hinze supported one of Akin's rivals and she didn't like Akin's recent remarks about rape. Yet the 71-year-old retired insurance agent from Joplin plans to remain a loyal Republican and vote for Akin in November.

"He's a little more conservative than I am, but I don't think he's dangerous," Hinze said.

Rick Althaus, a political science professor at Southeast Missouri State University, said that no matter the outcome of the Senate race, he's already changed the textbooks at his school. For more than a decade, the book used for the introductory course on American government included a section about Missouri politics written by Althaus that explained the state's bellwether nature. He removed that description for the 2012 edition.

Simply put: "Missouri is losing its bellwether status," Althaus said.

With the advent of the Internet, everything from personal relationships to business has become 'global' for all intents and purposes. Today, you can talk to people across the world just as easily as if you were talking to your next door neighbor. Businesses can exchange documents of all sorts with the push of a button - without having to wait days, and often weeks, for those documents to be delivered by hand. We are global, and this has had a profound effect in the area of business ethics.
What we must realize is that what may be deemed ethical in our own country is not necessarily deemed as ethical in another country. This often makes conducting global business quite hard. At one time, because we did not have the Internet, it was more of a question of not accidentally disrespecting on another's customs and traditions. However, today, there is much more at stake. You must also not trample all over another businesses - or countries - ethical code, while you remain true to your own businesses or country's ethical code.
The first step is to understand business traditions and customs in the country that the business you are dealing with resides in. Hopefully, they will do the same for you, making an effort to learn about your business traditions and customs. Next, you need a way to clearly communicate. In this area of the global marketplace, hiring the services of a talented translator is essential. You need to clearly know what they are saying, and they need to know what you are saying as well. Don't rely on your one semester of a foreign language from high school to get you through this.
Global business also has a profound effect on your employees. For example, if you do business with a foreign country that only keeps regular business hours - in their time zone - one or more of your employees will need to be available for telephone calls and such, when it is convenient for the foreign company. Are you expecting your employees to be in the office to field those calls or to conduct those teleconferences at midnight, and expecting them to clock in bright an early the following morning? That is not very ethical.
Another area that has become a growing concern when it comes to global business and ethics is reporting income from foreign countries. If your company makes a sale to a company in Canada, for example, that sale will not be reported to the IRS in the United States by the company that you made the sale to or Canada's government. It is not, by anyone's standards, ethical not to report that income to the IRS yourself.
In many countries, bribing officials is a part of doing business. However, this does not make the practice ethical, and experts advise business owners to instruct all of their employees that such practices will not be tolerated when conducting global business - or even when conducting business in your own country.
Global business is seemingly easy with the use of the Internet, but in the grand scheme of things, when you start looking at what is and is not acceptable or expected in foreign country, in terms of ethical business practices, one must use a great deal of caution.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? A South Korean court ruled Friday that technology giants Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. both infringed on each other's patents, and ordered a partial ban of their products in South Korea. The court also denied accusations that Samsung copied the look and feel of the iPhone and iPad.

The Seoul Central District Court ordered Apple to remove the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1 and iPad 2 from store shelves in South Korea, ruling that the products infringed on two of Samsung's five disputed patents, including those for telecommunications techology.

The court also denied Apple's claim that Samsung had illegally copied its design, and that the shape and big display screen existed in products before the iPhone and iPad.

"Based on the similarity in these features, it is not possible to assert that the two designs are similar," the court said in a ruling issued in Korean that was translated by the AP into English.

But in a twist, the court also ruled that Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung had infringed on one of Apple's patents related to the screen's bounce-back feature, which causes the screen to bounce back when a user scrolls to an end image. The court banned sales of products using the technology, including the Galaxy S2, in South Korea.

Sales of devices recently released by Samsung and Apple ? including the iPhone 4S and the Galaxy S3 smartphones ? were not affected.

Court spokesman Kim Mun-sung said the court's ruling was to take effect immediately, although companies often request that sanctions be suspended while they evaluate their legal options.

Nam Ki-young, a spokesman for Samsung, said the company has not decided what its next legal step might be. Apple did not respond to requests for comment.

The court also ordered each company to pay monetary compensation to its competitor. Samsung must pay Apple 25 million won ($22,000) while Apple must pay its rival 40 million won.

Legal experts not directly involved in the case said the ruling was favorable to Samsung since the company had won rare recognition from a court ? that Apple infringed its wireless patents, which had been denied by courts in Europe.

"This is basically Samsung's victory on its home territory," said patent attorney Jeong Woo-sung. "Out of nine countries, Samsung got the ruling that it wanted for the first time in South Korea."

Other courts in Europe rejected similar claims by Samsung that Apple violated its wireless patents, because many of the patents are considered to be industry standards. Industry standard patents are a crucial technology for new players to make products compatible with the rest of the market and must be licensed under fair and reasonable terms.

Europe's anti-trust regulator launched an investigation earlier this year into whether Samsung was failing to license its standard patents under fair and reasonable terms. In Friday's ruling, the court found no fault with Samsung and ruled that it did not abuse its industry standard patents.

The lawsuit is part of global, multibillion dollar fight between the world's two largest smartphone makers that has been unfolding in nearly a dozen countries.

However, the biggest stakes are in the U.S., where the two companies are locked in an epic struggle over patents and innovation in a federal court in San Jose, California.

Cupertino, California-based Apple sued Samsung in April 2011 in the U.S., alleging that some of the South Korean company's smartphones and computer tablets are illegal knockoffs of Apple's iPhone and iPad. Samsung denies the allegations and argues that all companies in the cutthroat phone industry mimic each other's successes without crossing the legal line.

Apple is suing Samsung for $2.5 billion and demanding that the court pull its most popular smartphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market, making the case one of the biggest technology disputes in history.

Jury deliberations began Wednesday after three weeks of testimony. The case went to the jury after last-minute talks between the companies' chief executives failed to resolve the dispute.

Shortly after Apple filed its suit in the U.S., Samsung filed a complaint in South Korea against Apple for allegedly breaching its telecommunications patents.

The battle is all the more complex as Apple and Samsung are not only competitors in the fast-growing global market for smartphones and tablet computers, but also have a close business relationship.

Samsung, the world's biggest manufacturer of memory chips and liquid crystal displays, supplies some of the key components that go into Apple products.

California town settles dispute that prompted bankruptcy

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Mammoth Lakes, one of three communities in California to recently declare bankruptcy, said on Wednesday it reached a tentative agreement to settle the legal dispute that threatened to swamp the town?s finances.

The resort town of about 8,000 residents in California?s Sierra Nevada Mountains said on its website that it settled a $43 million court judgment awarded to a developer over a property dispute.

The terms of the agreement will remain confidential until fully documented and executed, according to the town?s statement.

The town has been in a legal fight since 2006 with Mammoth Lakes Land Acquisition Llc. Developer Terrence Ballas, who holds commercial development rights to the property in the lawsuit, also is part of the settlement.

Mammoth Lakes credited U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Elizabeth Perris with guiding the mediation that produced the settlement, adding that a term sheet with its key points has been signed.

The town also said litigation between the parties in its bankruptcy case will be put on hold, although some key deadlines will remain. The case is in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of California (Case 12-32463).

Settlement documentation is expected to be filed for court approval within weeks, Mammoth Lakes said, adding that it will hold public meetings to discuss how to finance the settlement.

Mammoth Lakes filed for Chapter 9 protection on the heels of Stockton, California, filing for bankruptcy.

Stockton, a city of nearly 300,000 people in the state?s Central Valley, is the most populous U.S. city to seek protection from its creditors.

Stockton?s revenues have plunged in recent years due to the implosion of its one red-hot housing market, requiring that the city use bankruptcy to renege on some of its obligations, including paying for medical coverage for its retired employees, according to city officials.

By contrast, Mammoth Lakes sought bankruptcy protection because it could not afford to pay the $43 million judgment against the town.

San Bernardino, a city of 210,000 residents east of Los Angeles, was the third California city to file for Chapter 9 protection in recent weeks.

Rating agencies and municipal debt market experts say more local governments in California may seek Chapter 9 protection.

Educators should think of smart phones, not as barriers, but as learning tools to help prepare students to enter the modern workforce, according to a new report by a task force of technology education advisers to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.

The 48-member Task Force, assembled by Torlakson earlier this year, submitted recommendations last week on challenges and opportunities schools are facing as they strive toward modern education technology. The Superintendent created the Education Technology Task Force under his No Child Left Offline initiative in order to start building a modern California Education Technology Blueprint.

?Computer technology is changing the face of education?and rightfully so. It can be a powerful tool for preparing kids for the economy they will become a part of once they leave school,? said Torlakson in a press release.

The report?s first recommendation is for students to have access to at least one Internet learning device, any time any place. ?Possibly the biggest challenge facing public education is the demand for personalized learning using technology. The increasing demand for customized and personal education to meet students? unique needs is driving the development of new technologies, specifically personal devices and online content capable of immediately addressing learner choice and control, while allowing for differentiated instruction,? says the report.

From the announcement, the Task Force?s initial recommendations include:

? Promote expanded use of online instructional materials and student access to technology for standards-based curricula.
? Every student has access to at least one Internet device for learning anytime and anywhere, often called 1:1, which the Task Force calls ?possibly the biggest challenge facing public education? in this context.
? Form public-private partnerships for the funding and use of technology in the classroom.
? Develop guidance documents for students and their schools on safety and appropriate use, as well as existing laws and regulations.
? Create modern, personalized assessments for students that can help tailor their instruction?even within one class period.
? Encourage and reward teachers? and administrators? use of technology, including offering professional development to prepare them for its use across the education spectrum.
? Continue pursuing minimum bandwidth standards across the state.

S&P 500 finishes flat on Fed minutes

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 erased earlier losses to close flat on Wednesday after minutes from the latest Federal Reserve meeting indicated the central bank might be ready for another round of stimulus.

Minutes from the July 31-August 1 meeting suggested the Fed is likely to deliver another round of monetary stimulus "fairly soon" unless the economy improves considerably.

The only question for markets is whether the recent improvement in economic data, which came after that meeting, will have convinced Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke that no action is necessary.

"The market is questioning if the improvement we're seeing is substantial enough for Chairman Bernanke. He wants the (recently improving) economic data to translate into private- sector job creation," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial, in Newark, New Jersey.

"The initial reaction from the markets is that it is sooner rather than later that the Fed will come in."

Stocks had spent most of the session in negative territory after weak export data from Japan and caution over Greece's meetings this week with European Union officials gave investors reasons to pull back after the recent rally.

Among the most actively traded U.S. stocks on Wednesday was Dell Inc, down 5.4 percent at $11.68 a day after the No. 2 U.S. PC maker warned of a challenging second half and slashed its full-year earnings outlook. The NYSEArca computer hardware index lost 1 percent.

Following on the heels of Dell's results, Hewlett-Packard Co slipped 1.1 percent to $18.99 after the close as the world's largest PC maker posted a third-quarter loss.

On Tuesday, the S&P 500 hit its highest level in more than four years, but failed to hold that peak, and the index closed in the red. However, the S&P's steady move higher has lifted short-term support to the 1,400 level, although the index may need a positive catalyst to extend the rally.

The Jackson Hole, Wyoming, meeting of central bankers and economists at the end of the month is seen as possibly the next big market catalyst, followed by the European Central Bank's September 6 meeting and the German constitutional court's vote to ratify the euro zone's rescue fund six days later.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 30.82 points, or 0.23 percent, to 13,172.76. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index added 0.32 of a point, or 0.02 percent, to 1,413.49. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 6.41 points, or 0.21 percent, to 3,073.67.

Japan's exports slumped the most in six months in July as shipments to Europe and China tumbled, adding to concerns about global demand after a string of dire trade figures from Asia's export engines.

Uncertainty lingered over the effectiveness of Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' attempts to convince other European officials that his country should be given more time to meet targets for deficit cuts.

Toll Brothers Inc shares rose to $33.68, their highest since February 2007, after the largest U.S. luxury homebuilder reported a higher quarterly profit and a sharp jump in new orders. At the close, the stock was up 3.8 percent at $33.01. The PHLX housing sector index advanced 2 percent.

Continuing a string of bullish housing sector data, U.S. home resales rose in July as low interest rates and a modest improvement in the labor market helped home buying conditions.

Shares of Sunrise Senior Living surged 59.7 percent to $14.26 after Health Care REIT Inc said it would acquire the company for $14.50 per share. Health Care shares slid 2.7 percent to $58.14.

Volume was light with about 5.45 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, below the daily average of 6.62 billion.

Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a ratio of 3 to 2, while on the Nasdaq, five stocks fell for every three that rose.
