A question asked by many people is ski to get fit or get fit to ski? Skiing can be an excellent way to get fit but unless you spend weeks on end skiing every day then I don?t think it is possible to ski to get fit. Many people laugh at the thought of the Wii ski fit games, however this is one way to improve your health and increase your ski specific fitness.
Skiing is a brilliant, aerobic sport which uses core muscle and is a great cardiovascular work out. I love skiing so much that I?ve worked for three months as a seasonaire in the French ski resort of Meribel, for three Winters in a row, before returning to the UK to work for a catered ski holiday company during the off-season.
To get the most out of your ski holiday, preparation is vital. Packing the right gear and booking the perfect chalet are not the only important aspects of a ski holiday. Getting fit before you go will only lead to a more enjoyable holiday, so an exercise program designed at increasing cardiovascular endurance, strength and agility is a great way to improve your all round fitness and help out on the holiday!
A lot of people find solo exercise hard work and demotivating. Here are a list of exercises classes which are perfect for getting fit for skiing and staying so after your holiday is over!
Body pump: a weight based group fitness program to music. A typical body pump class usually last for 60 minutes and is a fantastic way to get fit for your skiing holiday. The class consists of music and choreography aimed at targeting certain muscles groups. The classes are particular aimed at strength endurance which is vital for ski fitness. After a couple of months of these classes you will reap the benefits on the slopes!
Zumba: a Colombian dance fitness program aimed at increasing cardiovascular endurance. This class consists of dance and aerobic exercise combined to increase heart rate and fitness. This is another brilliant group class which can be useful for getting ski fit. Cardiovascular endurance is needed for skiing; the fitter you are, the longer you can ski for and the less tired you will become!
Pilates: a class which is brilliant for developing core strength needed for reacting to the changing terrain on the piste. Core muscles such as oblique?s and abdominals may not seem necessary for getting down the hill but being able to adjust to the bumps and differing terrain whilst skiing is aided by your core muscles. Combine this with a body combat class for a couple of months before your trip and you will be well away!
Spinning: perfect for increasing both endurance and strength. The big muscle groups such as the quads and hamstrings play a huge role in skiing ability. The aching feeling in the calves, quads and glutes after a couple of days skiing will inevitably affect everyone. However, spinning classes are great ways to target these specific areas, so again, your legs will ache less and you will be able to ski for longer each day!
So there you have it, some essential classes which are perfect for increasing your ski fitness. Skiing will definitely lead to a burn in the thighs and give you a good work out for the week, but why not be prepared and ready for this by taking part in some of these classes beforehand?
