Montrose toddler killed after being accidentally backed over in ...

MONTROSE, Ia. (WGEM) -

A Lee County woman is living her worst nightmare tonight. She was backing up her car this morning and accidentally ran over and killed her twenty month old daughter.

Grandma Jan James and close family friend Sandra Hart say they don't want another family to go through what they're going through right now.

"If it saves one kid and their parent looking out the back of the car, or making sure they know where the kids are, it's a good thing that they look because these freak things happen," says Hart.

This morning, they suffered the devastating loss of nearly two year old Meyah James. Jan says - it all started when Meyah's mother got in her car to take a load of trash to the dumpster a few feet away from their home. "The baby ran up before she even knew it," said James.

Tom Bentley with the Quincy Fire Department says oftentimes the drivers in these accidents are parents. "That's what does it a lot of times - not checking - not taking that extra second to walk around the car and make sure that small child is not behind the car before they get in," he said.

Bentley says these accidents often involve very young kids."Most of the information that I was finding was about children under five, so maybe they aren't at the point where they've learned that yet."

Jan James says while her family struggles with this tragedy, she hopes other parents take note of their story."We just want to get it out there that your kids are faster than you think they are," she said.

Funeral arrangements are pending with the Barr Memorial Chapel. Her family has set up a bank account at Fort Madison Bank and Trust to help offset funeral costs.
